  • Ep. 3 — The Laundry Road
    4 Nov 2026

"A road that carries dirty shirts can carry anything."Out here, the laundry is where the wall talks to itself. Three castles full of fine people produce a lot of dirty clothes, and the wall has pride but not enough hands — so the washing comes outside, to the forgotten. Bundles go out through the gate on wash days, and bundles come back clean. Been that way for forty years. The castles call it practical. Zaira's gran called it the only honest road in the world.Tonight's journal: Zaira is mending a bundle — a shirt from Emberhold, steward's colors, torn at the cuff — when her needle hits something that isn't thread. Sewn into a fold in the hem is a strip of cloth covered in writing so small she has to hold it to the fire. It's a letter. From inside. A woman writing to her sister — her sister, outside, one of the Left — about a baby, born in the spring, named for their mother. Forty years those two hadn't spoken, and the whole time the road was right there, running under everybody's nose, in the dirty laundry.A letter out of the wall is worth money. Worth favors. Worth knowing things — and inside, information is water; out here too. So why does Zaira sew the hem up better than she found it and send that shirt home unread by anyone but her? Because a road only works if nobody's taxing it — and the day people start opening the laundry is the day the laundry stops carrying letters, and some woman inside never learns her niece's name.In this episode:• The laundry road: how the wall's washing became its secret mail• The letter in the hem: a sister, a baby, and forty years of silence• Why she put it back — she doesn't spend roads; she keeps them open• The skill: hiding a message in plain sight (ride what already moves, live in the repair, and the carrier must not know) — and how to spot oneBeyond the Wall — Season One. Zaira's journal podcast, a companion to the post-apocalyptic audio drama Left for Bad by James Bell Jr. Every Wednesday, Zaira reads a dated entry from her exclusive journal aloud to her platoon — the runs, the roads, and the survival skill each run taught her — and from Episode 7 on, every story opens a real-life question she and Harold argue out loud, ending in a listener poll: what would you do? 21 Oct 2026

The map says the Salt Flats run is two days of nothing — no water, no shade, carry in and carry out. Then Zaira finds an old cistern where no well should be, and the clean survival math turns into a human decision: when your water is counted in sips, how much of it belongs to somebody else?Zaira reads the October 21 journal entry, teaches the outside rule — half for the walk in, half for the walk back — and admits where she almost did the math wrong on a person. If your survival is counted in sips, do you share with a stranger — or keep every drop you need to get home?Beyond the Wall is a Left for Bad companion series from Watah Kik As Anime.
