Beyond the Business is a narrative podcast about the systems that quietly shape modern business — energy, infrastructure, sustainability, technology, and risk. Each episode deconstructs the economic logic behind today’s transitions, exposing hidden costs, legacy structures, and long-term consequences that rarely appear in boardrooms or reports. It’s about helping business see the system it operates in more clearly. My LinkedIn Page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-byelyavtsev-a702a22a/Alex White Economics
  • S7E7 How Cities Make Waste Disappear
    25 Oct 2026

You put the bag out. In the morning it is gone. That is not housekeeping. That is an industry.

Seoul weighs the kilo and still sends diesel. New York calls collection free and pays in the budget, the garage and the overtime. Rome can keep the street clear with people who can no longer lift, and trucks that do not always start.

A clean city is not necessarily an efficient waste system.

What does it actually take for tonight’s waste to vanish by morning, and what does that cost in people, machines, money and spare capacity?

  • S7E6 What Industry Leaves Behind
    21 Oct 2026

The last tyre you replaced is unlikely to come back as the tyre you put on. Not because the engineer failed. Because the engineer succeeded.

A wind blade is glued not to peel. A needle is used once on purpose. A hull was sold as the one that would not rot. By the time a recycler sees it, the important meeting is over.

What does industry leave behind when durability becomes waste?

  • S7E5 The Factory of Waste
    18 Oct 2026

What would the perfect waste factory look like?

The bag goes in. Cameras read the object. Robots pick it. Plastic comes apart. Gold comes out of an old laptop. Heat goes into radiators.

Those machines already exist. They just do not live in one building.

So how close are we, really, to a factory that can deal with waste?
