    Joining us are the novelist, playwright and memoirist Alice Jolly and novelist Patrick McCabe, to discuss the A Passage to India by E.M. Forster. First published in 1924, by the end of that year, A Passage to India had sold 17,000 copies in Britain and 54,000 in the USA and today is viewed as a seminal text in post-colonial literature. A Passage to India grapples with, among many themes, colonialism and faith, and is set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement in the 1920s. In this episode we reflect on its legacy today.     In light of the death of Annie Dillard, we are revisiting our discussion of her Pulitzer Prize-winning classic Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. First published in 1974, when Dillard was still in her twenties, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction the following year. A landmark work of nature writing, observation and spiritual enquiry, it established Dillard as one of the most distinctive voices in American literature. Joining us are writers Jay Griffiths and Geoff Dyer, both making their Backlisted debuts in the original episode. Griffiths is the author of Wild: An Elemental Journey and, most recently, How Animals Heal Us, published in paperback in 2026. Dyer’s books include The Last Days of Roger Federer and his recent memoir Homework, an account of his childhood and adolescence in postwar England.     Recorded live in Galway in 2021, we were joined by novelist Mary Costello for a special episode recorded live at Galway International Arts Festival in Ireland. The book we're debating is Elizabeth Costello (2003) by South-African born Nobel Laureate J.M. Coetzee, a novel that politely asks the reader to consider, amongst other matters, animal rights, the power of faith and the limits of fiction itself. I am amazed that Backlisted has not yet received a review and feel that I have to write one. This is a literary podcast, presented by Andy Miller and John Mitchinson and concentrates on older books, rather than new releases. Episodes normally involve a guest author who chooses a favourite book, which is then discussed.

Like many avid readers I am often enticed by new, shiny things, while neglecting the treasures that already live on my bookshelves. This podcast helps you discover, or rediscover, books and authors which have stood the test of time. I do not always read the books discussed, but often I do and I have found many favourites along the way.

I find the presenters very intelligent, thoughtful and often funny. A must-try for readers in my opinion and I would be delighted if anyone reads this and decides to give it a try.
