Özet

Autism Help is a podcast exploring the co-occurring conditions, daily challenges, and practical realities that shape the lives of Autistic people and those who support them.

Hosted by Heather McKay (she/they) — a late-diagnosed Autistic mother of two, educator, company director, and author of Autism: The Big Book Set of Help — the series provides honest, neuroaffirming information about topics that are often overlooked, misunderstood, or poorly explained by mainstream services.

Drawing on lived experience, years of facilitating support groups, and extensive research, Heather explores subjects including ARFID, executive dysfunction, sleep disorders, fibromyalgia, incontinence, literacy, and supporting multiply-disabled children. Each episode aims to provide practical knowledge, reduce isolation, and help listeners better understand the realities of Autistic life beyond the diagnostic criteria.

Whether you're Autistic yourself, a parent, educator, support worker, or healthcare professional, Autism Help offers accessible, evidence-informed conversations grounded in both expertise and lived experience.

  • Autism and Intelligence
    4 Nov 2026

In this episode of Autism Help, Heather McKay explores the relationship between intelligence and neurodivergence, questioning how we measure intelligence and why different ways of thinking are so often misunderstood.

Heather discusses the limitations and biases of IQ testing, spiky cognitive profiles, giftedness and the challenges faced by autistic and ADHD people whose abilities and support needs may not fit traditional expectations. Drawing on her experiences as a parent, teacher, and neurodivergent person, she examines how schools can overlook individual strengths, why it matters to support deep interests and different learning styles, and why intelligence shouldn't be confused with conformity or conventional ideas of success.

    Content Note:

This episode includes discussion of educational discrimination, negative experiences at school, disability-related stigma and autistic burnout. Please listen with care if these subjects may be difficult for you.
