71 North Our Way explores the people, projects, experiments, and ideas shaping the culture of the 71 North Partnership Studio at Northern Illinois University.

Through lively conversations inspired by stories from across the studio, we look beyond what happens at 71 North to explore how things happen: how small ideas become projects, how students grow into contributors and leaders, how different disciplines find reasons to work together, and how curiosity, experimentation, and shared work create unexpected opportunities.

Drawing from The 71 North Way, the Pulse newsletter, studio programs, research, community partnerships, and the accomplishments of the people who make up 71 North, each episode digs into a simple question: What can this story teach us about the way we work?

Whether you’re new to 71 North, already part of the community, or simply curious about the studio, come discover the stories behind the work.

This is how we learn, experiment, contribute, and grow.

This is 71 North, our way.

  • Start Here: The Unwritten Rules of Good Teamwork
    11 Sep 2026

Why do so many group projects fail even when everyone involved is capable and well intentioned?

Often, the problem is not talent. It is the absence of a shared system for working together.

In this episode of 71 North Our Way, we explore the practical mechanics behind collaboration at the 71 North Partnership Studio. We look at how small visible contributions build momentum, why hidden work creates fragility, how the blocker format makes asking for help easier, and how living documentation allows knowledge to survive beyond one person or one semester.

We also examine the contributor journey and the Studio Compact—two frameworks that introduce collaboration gradually and make expectations reciprocal between the studio and its members.

Good teamwork is not magic. It is built through visible work, clear communication, shared responsibility, and everyday practice.

  • Jerry's Story: Building Beyond the Screen
    4 Sep 2026

What happens when an interest in game development grows into a desire to build systems that move, sense, and respond in the physical world?

In this episode of 71 North Our Way, we follow Jerry Stamos’s journey at Northern Illinois University and the 71 North Partnership Studio. As a mechatronics engineering student, Jerry connects programming, electronics, and mechanical design through projects involving virtual reality, robotics, computer vision, autonomous systems, and a high-altitude balloon launched toward the edge of space.

Although these projects may appear very different, Jerry approaches each one as part of a larger system: gathering input, processing information, and creating a meaningful response. His story shows how interdisciplinary learning becomes more powerful when students have access to real projects, supportive mentors, collaborative teams, and space to experiment.

We also explore the habits behind Jerry’s growth, from using small pockets of time and following opportunities across campus to balancing technical work with photography, design, reading, and drone flying.

Jerry’s journey is a reminder that building beyond the screen is not only about connecting hardware and software. It is about connecting disciplines, experiences, and people, and finding a community where curiosity can become contribution.

  • From Skills to Impact in Spring 2026
    28 Aug 2026

How does a student move from learning a new skill to using it on work that matters?

In this episode of 71 North Our Way, we follow a Spring 2026 semester at the 71 North Partnership Studio as students move from career certificates and faculty research conversations into hackathons, immersive technology, community problem-solving, demonstrations, and undergraduate research.

We explore how Synergy Lab and Northern Exposure broaden what students know, how Husky Hackers use both industrial challenges and game jams to practice rapid development, and how Random Hacks of Kindness connects technical skills to food insecurity and student dignity.

The episode also highlights the Public Health VR Playlist, Demo Day, Innovation Graduation, student research recognition, and the partnerships that help transform studio participation into future opportunity.

At 71 North, skills are not the destination. They are the starting material for contribution and impact.
