We've all heard the phrase "that's my truth." But when did the way we feel become the final authority on what's true?

Our feelings matter. They shape our experiences, influence our decisions, and help us recognize what matters to us. But feeling something strongly doesn't automatically mean our interpretation of a situation is accurate.

In this episode of Kyle Talks, I'm exploring why we've become so comfortable treating feelings as facts, how that can affect our relationships and public conversations, and why we need to learn to separate what we feel from what we actually know.

We'll discuss:

  • Feelings vs. facts: Why your emotional experience can be real without every conclusion you draw from it being correct.
  • The problem with "that's my truth": When does sharing a personal experience become a way to shut down questions or disagreement?
  • How emotions influence our beliefs: Why fear, anger, and personal experiences can shape how we interpret information—and sometimes lead us to overlook evidence.
  • When feelings become the final authority: How treating our emotions as unquestionable can make productive conversations and personal growth more difficult.
  • How to do better: Practical ways to acknowledge our feelings, question our assumptions, examine evidence, and make more thoughtful decisions.

This isn't an argument for ignoring emotions or dismissing people's experiences. It's about recognizing the difference between how we feel, what we believe those feelings mean, and what we can actually establish as true.

Our feelings can be valuable guides. They can alert us to problems, help us understand ourselves, and encourage us to ask important questions. But they shouldn't be the final judge of reality.

The challenge: The next time you feel strongly about something, ask yourself three questions: What am I feeling? What do I actually know? And what evidence supports the conclusion I'm drawing?

Because understanding ourselves requires more than listening to our emotions. It requires the willingness to examine them.

Let's talk: Have you ever been completely convinced you were right because of how you felt, only to discover you were missing part of the picture? What changed your mind?

Follow Kyle Talks for more conversations about challenging our assumptions, understanding different perspectives, and learning how to disagree better.
