「津軽」は、太宰の故郷訪問記。ある年(注:昭和19年)の春、私は、生まれ故郷の金木のある津軽半島を三週間かけて訪問した。蟹田での中学時代の唯一の友人N君からの歓待、T君とその友人らと観瀾山に登っての志賀直哉談義、Sさんのお家に招かれての疾風怒濤のような津軽らしい歓待ぶり、竜飛崎の凄愴な光景と巡ったのち、生家にたどり着く。長兄、次兄らとの対面には気疲れするが、嫂、姪、祖母らと再会できた。そしていよいよ、幼少の頃、子守として育ててくれたたけとの再会のために深浦に向かう。30年ぶりに念願の再会を果たし、私はたけの子だと改めてつくづく思うのであった（なお、朗読テキストは、響林社のサイトにてダウンロードできます(無料)。
変人で無精者の小説家の兄、妊娠している嫂と3人暮らしの「私」の家での、深々と雪が降る夜の他愛もないがほのぼのとした「雪の夜の話」。
「黄金風景」は最近映画化もされた佳作。小さい頃、女中のお慶をいじめた私は、その後家を追われ、東京で貧乏な作家として糊口を凌いでいる。ある日、巡査が戸籍調べで訪ねてきたが、それが意外にも同郷でお慶と所帯を持っているという。四人の子供とともに幸せな様子で、三日後に夫婦と末の子で訪ねてきた。敗北感に囚われ苛立った「私」は海浜へ飛び出していく。帰ってくると3人は彼を誉めていた。「負けた」・・・かれらの勝利は、また私のあすの出発にも、光を与える。
東北への疎開ですし詰めの列車の中で恩をかけてくれた女性によびかける「たずねびと」。久しぶりに東京に戻り、本屋で偶然出会った旧知の若い女性とその母をめぐる「メリイクリスマス」。
