井伏鱒二の処女作「山椒魚」に続く佳作。「花に嵐のたとえもあるぞ　さよならだけが人生だ（『厄除詩集』）」という井伏作品の放浪的基調低音に通じる抒情的作品。

私は散歩の途中、沼池のほとりで猟銃で撃たれて苦しんでいる雁（がん）を見つけた。抱き上げたときの羽毛や体の温かみ、意外に重たい目方に、その時の私の思い屈した心は慰められる。私は、どうしても丈夫にしてやりたい思いに駆られ、家に連れて帰り治療し、羽を切り、”サワン”と名付けた。雁との心通わせる日々は続く。――しかしある月夜のこと、けたたましいサワンの鳴き声がするので出てみると、屋根の上にのぼって、飛び去っていく３匹の雁と交信している様子だった。「サワンに対する私の愛着を裏切ってかれが遠くに逃げ去るはずはない」。けれどサワンは、月の明るい夜更けに限って鳴き声をたてるようになり、そして……。
