１９６４年に東京－新大阪間・東海道新幹線が営業運転を開始し、いまや北海道から鹿児島まで路線網を広げている。対するエアラインは、１９５１年に羽田－伊丹－福岡便、羽田－千歳便の就航が戦後初となる国内定期旅客運航だ。
新幹線整備が進むにしたがって、エアラインのシェアを獲得してきたが、航空が防戦一方かというと、そんなことはない。東日本大震災などの特殊要因を除けば、８０年代以降、旅客数を堅調に伸ばしている。新規航空会社の参入、新規就航路線の増加、航空運賃のネット割引といった積極策が奏功している。そうした点では、新幹線とエアラインが互いに学ぶべき点は多い。両ライバルの攻防は、どうも東京・大阪からの視点で語られがちだが、それだけでよいのか。年間延べ５億人超が利用する新幹線とエアライン。その進化の現場を探っていく。
