ベンチャー界では評価額が１０億ドル以上の未公開企業を、幻の生き物である一角獣になぞらえて「ユニコーン企業」と呼ぶ。日本のユニコーン企業数は２０１８年６月時点で２社。上場したメルカリを除くと、プリファード・ネットワークス１社だけ。一方、世界のユニコーン企業数を見渡すと、米国が１１６社、中国７１社とその差は圧倒的だ。米国では大型機関投資家が直接リスクマネーを供給しており、ＶＣ投資額は７兆円と日本の約５０倍。日本のベンチャー市場の絶対額はまだまだ小さい。しかし、官製ファンドなどにより、ベンチャー市場にリスクマネーが流入。近年は、大企業もベンチャー投資に意欲を見せ、市場拡大に拍車をかける。活気あるベンチャー３０社を紹介し、将来のユニコーンを探し出したい。
