Whispering Pines is a classic, quiet, private American subdivision on the edge of Asheville, NC, set in the pristine Blue Ridge Mountains. Which is good since the zombie apocalypse has come to Western North Carolina and really put suburban living to the test! Surrounded by a sea of the undead, the residents of Whispering Pines have adapted their bucolic life of block parties to scavenging parties, common area groundskeeping to immediate area warfare, neighborhood beautification to neighborhood fortification.

Dylan Townsend stands on the beach watching commercial jets fall out of the sky like oak leaves twirling in the wind. A wing shears off the one closest to the shore just before it splashes down in the sea. Why was she telling him this outlandish story? Disorder and chaos ravage London when thousands are contaminated by the accidental discharge of an experimental bio-weapon. The disease robs its hosts of rational thought, giving them a singular desire - find more living flesh to infect. Cut off from information and senior leadership, one squadron of soldiers under the command of their senior NCO, Sergeant Major Johnson, finds itself forced to operate independently until the remnants of military and government command re-establish themselves safely at sea in the English Channel.

Summary
The American Midwest - a bucolic ideal that hasn't quite translated to the zombie apocalypse. Instead of open arms and welcoming faces, there are now open mouths and ravenous Zs. The blue collar drive to work hard is now a red-mouthed hunger for flesh. Jace Stanford, as well as the remnants of the survivors of Whispering Pines, and the rag tag bunch of private military contractors, laborers, and former (everyone hopes) cannibals now must face the vast, exposed space of America's Heartland in order to get to the possible sanctuary of The Stronghold in the post-apocalyptic ruins of Boulder, Colorado.
Just a simple convoy from point A to point B, right? Yeah, right. Not for these folks. Z-Burbia 5: The Bleeding Heartlands is full of blood, guts, puss, and snark as Jace and company are forced to deal with yet another whacko group of crazy survivors, zombie hordes on a scale they have never seen, and the mystery of who keeps skinning folks and leaving the butchered bodies as some type of bloody warning. Yep, just another fun time in Z-Burbia for the Stanfords!

The Zombie Apocalypse Just Got Worse, Smelling
What could possibly be worse than experiencing the zombie apocalypse? Try experiencing it with a stomach bug! Jace and the survivors are hit with a flu that affects half the camp, and bodies are emptied through both ends of the digestive track. Not bad enough? Throw in a Midwestern blizzard and watch what happens!
Yes, things start out pretty gross (see how I declined to use the clichéd pun?), but get worse as Jace's constant head traumas remove his mental filter. Imagine dealing with that guy like him with Tourette's. Now, triple it!
This series continues to deliver the laughs, and Andrew B. Wehrlen remains the perfect narrator for this adventure.

Short Pork has gone insane!!!!!!!
If you could sum up Z-Burbia 5 in three words, what would they be?
"I don't know"..... I'm really sick of Jace thinking out loud, however it had to be so in order for banter between Jace and lizard Jesus.
Have you listened to any of Andrew B. Wehrlen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but he does an exceptional job.

Don't listen out of order like me
Here's my update at 2% in on Goodreads: Just started listening to the audio... one of the guys is sick and is constantly throwing up. The narrator actually makes a sound that sounds like someone throwing up... I'm going to get sick myself if this keeps up. Ugh... 2% in.
That's not a winning start. Fortunately, this does not keep up for long. I would have shut it off it that were the case. I just cannot handle that noise! What's worse is that I did not know the characters. All of them are sick at the beginning of this, but I feel like a friend of a friend is telling me about this story. I have no vested experience with them so if a favorite character dies, I am not going to care.
It was really hard getting into this, for the reason above, and a few others. The story feels like it is keeping me at arm's length, but I also just finished a zombie novel with the same premise, cult leader, child of one of the men stolen, etc. There are so many reasons why this one did not work for me but I think it mostly circles around the fact that this is book five.
I'm sure had I known the characters that I would have enjoyed the story more. One characters nickname is changed at the beginning and I would have enjoyed knowing the background of the first but that did not take away from the hilarity of the situation.
All in all, it was good, but not great. I'm sure readers of the full series probably enjoyed this.
The audio version was good. After the sounds from the beginning I really thought I was going to have to set this down. Fortunately, that was the only portion that was like that. The audio was great from there and Andrew B. Wehrlen was able to keep up with the action. The voices were also very good. I could easily tell the voices apart, which made understanding each character, being new to the series, much easier.

Had to skipped a lots of the audible due to Jason
Had to skipped a lots of the audible due to Jason again have gotten to the point I can not handle this character and even thought I like the series I question my reason to purchase.
The story is fairly like the other books but in this you meet religious crazies and minster like we have today, more skinned bodies of people and skin folded in nice neat piles and oh yes more and more zombies.
The series is good but it has it drawbacks specially with Jason a gurk, bigot and all around asshole and very much hated.

All I have to say is "WOW "
Out of all five books, this one had me on the floor in hysterics. Jake Bible, had me laughing at least every five minutes. Long Pork, aka Jace, gets himself into trouble again. The book is extremely fast paced. I found myself not wanting it to end. Looking forward to book 6.

yes
Any additional comments?
I wasn't a fan of volume 5. It seemed like a place holder or something. I like the Z-Burbia series as a rule but this book seemed rushed. Hoping book 6 is better!

Another great installment, but...
This one was good but only felt like 1/2 a book. I guess because the story didn't go that far. It didn't progress the story line. I love E these books and will listen to the next one, but hope we get more. Thanks Jake. They all can't be perfect.
