Story
From the 11th storey of a Los Angeles high-rise, Nate looks out on the city - the traffic, the trees, and the beach beyond. He breathes deeply. And then he moves one foot off the ledge and into thin air. But before he can jump, gunshots ring out from within the building. A robbery is in progress. And Nate, with nothing to lose but the life he was about to give up, decides to intervene. What happens next plunges Nate into mortal danger...and reunites him with the family he hasn't known for years - a family he will do anything to protect.

Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution. The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s a story that most people know, told here in an unforgettable way – an audio masterpiece that rivals the best thrillers, thanks to Capote genre-defining words and Brick’s subtle but powerful characterizations. On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

An exciting and unique rollercoaster …….
First time I have ventured into the world of Gregg Hurwitz …..brilliant. I could not put it away. I normally use my ipod / audio book to help me go to sleep and if I wake up; send me back to sleep again. I have had very little sleep this week…it was just too exciting..the suspense was heart pounding and the mystery just too intriguing and you just want to know how the characters fare ! I could never have guessed the underlying plot .. What an imagination this author has. The narration captured the characters perfectly – I could have been there; it was like watching a film. My only criticism was that in between sections and chapters – there are very prolonged pauses. The pauses were so long that I kept checking that my ipod had not gone into sleep mode ! I would not let this put you off – well worth a listen.

Narrated by the master himself
I started reading this and found that the repetitiveness of Michael's childhood got really tedious. So I considered returning it to audible for something by an author that I had read before. I decided to read 1 more chapter before I quit then next thing I know I finished it. And it was all too soon. All 56 chapters lol. The book is excellent I was totally stunned when I discovered why the poor main character was having such an awful time of it. But I wont spoil it for you all I will say is hang in there it is well worth the effort! Jeff Harding is my favourite narrator. I have listened and enjoyed his voice in lee child books, john connolly books and some by dean koontz, and many more. He really nails it with his character voices.

I bet you don't guess!!!
This caused me to wince with horror many a time. An American tale that was gripping throughout. A family man with a past that he cannot guess at nor the listener. The narrator, Jeff Harding, was superb. I thoroughly recommend it.

A real audio 'page turner
I couldn't wait to get to each next chapter - this rollicks along fantastically. One plot device towards the end is a little contrived, but necessary after the way in which Hurwitz builds the tension - I can easily forgive. The narration is excellent - it's more like a dramatisation than a reading, and really pleasing to listen to.
If you like psychological thrillers with some action and excellent characterisation, with goodies, baddies and some who havn't decided, then I think you'll enjoy this. I'll be seeing what else Hurwitz has written and download it asap!

Great new Author find
I think I selected this book on reviews and synopsis. Not heard of Gregg before and I'm am just loving this book. Actually I'm enjoying it so much I've in the middle of it whilst writing this review. Well written and easy to listen to - the story is gripping. Based in the present with little jumps back in the past as the back story is integral. The narrator Jeff Harding is doing an excellent job. Think I was a little concerned when I started listening as he has a very strong american accent, don't let that stop you he is brilliant at portraying the characters. I am expecting a strong end and will be off to find more of his books. Hope this is not too preemptive - I'm confident.

Very Poor Production & Editing
This is a brilliant story spoilt by an editor / producer who decided to add a pause ranging anything from 5-10 plus seconds in between all the chapters. It's really frustrating and unlike ANY book I've listened to in over forty years, dating back to tape cassettes. Hell this book would need a cassette just for the blank spaces its unnecessary pauses are that annoying. I feel really sorry for the author as it's a fabulous story, so much so I've bought the book for my friend but as a hardback version as I want her to enjoy it.

Hooked from the start.
This book believe it or not was personally recommended to me as a top read of 2011 by Simon Toyne the best selling author of the Sanctus Trilogy.
He also recommended Gunshot Straight by Lou Berney which is next on my list to buy. Recommendations don't get much better than this.
