The odd thing about my unhappiness. I absolutely thought it was my job that made me unhappy and therefore impacted my personal relationship. So for the past 4 years, I had struggled at work and felt that I was the problem. Even my spouse had me convinced that I was the problem and to simply walk away from my job. Things became so overwhelming I had to take some time off work to have some mental space to think.
Within the first three weeks of being off work, I cried nearly every day wondering if I could go on with life. One day I came across this book and several others on Amazon audio books. As I meditate and listen to the books I increasingly felt better. I even kept a diary of my thoughts.
After just two months of listening to this audiobooks and keeping a diary I found out why I was so unhappy. It is my marriage. I realised that I am getting emotional support, empathy and understanding in my marriage. He constantly tells me to find a different job but reminds me that I have to maintain an income for our cost of living. He never gives me encouragement but tells me that he doing me a favour by reminding me what is the facts.
I am ashamed to say this but I knew he did not meet hardly any of my standards for a relationship from the very beginning - my instincts told me so. I ignored my instincts and hoped for the best, and lowered my standards. He has managed in four years to make me feel unworthy and unimportant. I slowly accepted his treatment and it seeped into my job. I realised I was doing all the giving and receiving hardly anything. I lived my life to make it convenient for him. My life revolved around his wants and needs. I totally ignored my own needs hoping things would get better. It seems as though I kept lowering my standards throughout the relationship until now where I feel unable to breathe or dream. This is these are my very words written in my diary – "I feel I cannot breathe and feel stuck. I feel that I unable to dream or make plans". Very powerful.
What happened to me is truly a long story but I am so happy to find this audiobook it has really helped me on the road of changing my life. Thank you so much Sonia Choquette and Amazon.
5th Sept 2018 this is an update from my earlier review. I have just listened this book a second time, ACTUALLY doing all the suggested exercises in each chapter. The first time I listened to the book, I did not do the exercises and felt that they were not an important part of this book. Regrettably I was wrong. Please do the exercises they really work. I have written them down so that I do them over and over or just to refresh myself on what I have learned. The one exercise that stands out to me mostly and makes me smile is the Day Dream Believer - where it is suggested to “read children books and fairy tales, buy crayons and markers and paper spend 15 minutes colouring, and watch children’s cartoons”. I instantly felt young and smiled the full day as if I had a secret. What really gave me pleasure was look at interior designer magazines. My imagination ran wild when I did this. Great book
