You ever wake up in a police cell with a stuffed toy bird under one arm and only the vaguest idea how you got there? No? Mike Delaney has.

Lucky for him, the cop in charge isn’t looking to put on a courtroom circus—he’s offering a job. Of sorts. Mike’s just starting to think his luck’s on the mend when in struts Joe Macy, a private eye with big ambitions, with an even better offer.

Now Mike’s knee-deep in a case that smells funny: a man who might be dead—or might not; Kay Sullivan, a B-movie star with enough secrets to sink a studio; and Jimmy the Fan, a wiry little guy in a check jacket with more sidelines than a racetrack tout.

From cocktail bars to alleyways that whisper death, Young Gun in New York pulls no punches. Gritty, wry, and packed with action, it’s the first in The Mack Denver Series.

If you like your noir with snap, swagger, and just enough smoke to sting the eyes—think Get Shorty, L.A. Confidential, and Chinatown—this one’s for you.

This who-done-it kept me listing due to a combination of the narrator and the author. This author did an incredible job of using the five-senses to engage the reader. The main character is well put together, I look forward to listening to Eddie's next novel in the series.

This is a fast-paced noir crime story set in post-WWII New York. The story follows Mike Delaney, a war veteran turned private investigator, who gets pulled into a mystery involving a movie star, a supposedly dead husband, and plenty of mob trouble along the way.

What I enjoyed most was the classic noir atmosphere. The opening grabbed my attention right away, and there were several moments where the dialogue felt sharp and entertaining. Fans of old-school hard-boiled detective stories in the style of Mike Hammer, Sam Spade, and Raymond Chandler will likely feel right at home here.

That said, I found myself wanting a little more character development. The story moves quickly, and at times I never felt like I fully got to know Mike or some of the supporting characters before the plot rushed ahead. While the mystery kept me interested, I would have liked a bit more emotional depth and breathing room in certain scenes.

Overall, this was an enjoyable listen with a strong noir vibe and plenty of action. While it wasn't perfect, it has enough promise that I'd be interested in checking out the next book in the series.

Young Gun in New York is a fast-paced, hard-boiled detective story that captures the spirit of classic noir while feeling fresh and entertaining. Eddie McBoon delivers sharp dialogue, memorable characters, and plenty of twists that kept me engaged from beginning to end. Mike Delaney is a flawed but compelling protagonist, and watching him navigate New York's dangerous underworld made for a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
Jonathan Medina's narration is excellent, bringing each character to life with energy and personality. His pacing fits the story perfectly, making it easy to get immersed in the action, humor, and suspense.
If you're a fan of classic detective fiction with a modern touch, this audiobook is well worth your time. It's an entertaining start to what promises to be a great series, and I'll definitely be looking forward to the next installment. Highly recommended!

This is a classic detective story that is fast-paced and an easy read. It follows the same path as classic 1940s detective stories so if you want something new and exciting, this isn't it, but I really enjoyed the banter and humor of this book.
