Summary
Half-vampire Darren and his new friend are on the hunt for a monster in the third installment of New York Times best-selling Saga of Darren Shan series.
Darren, the vampire's assistant, gets a taste of the city when he leaves the Cirque du Freak with Evra the snake-boy and Mr. Crepsley. When corpses are discovered - corpses drained of blood - Darren and Evra are compelled to hunt down whatever foul creature is committing such horrendous acts. Meanwhile, beneath the streets, evil stalks Darren and Evra, and all clues point to Mr. Crepsley. Can they escape, or are they doomed to perish in the tunnels of blood?

Enjoyable Series
I am enjoying this dark series from Darren Shan, but the narrator's voice can be annoying at times.

A fine third chapter
This builds on the series in an interesting way, focusing on fewer characters and developing the relationships between them. I found the protagonist insufferable in the first book and while I sympathised with them more in the second, I still found them fairly annoying but the story and other characters were interesting.
This theme continues through a large portion of this story as well. Darren continues to irritate, jump to wrong conclusions and leave you with obvious plot "twists" that make you want to facepalm but his character does start to develop as the book progresses. By the end, he's actually made some sensible decisions and there glimmers that perhaps he is maturing.
I have to remind myself that in the book, Darren is still essentially a child so naivety and mistakes are more forgivable but the author is at least suggesting he's starting to learn from them. If the series continues in this vein and Darren becomes more competent, the series will only improve.
