Publisher's Summary

In the second book in The Hundredth Queen Series, Emily R. King once again follows a young warrior queen's rise to meet her destiny in a richly imagined world of sorcery and forbidden powers.

Though the tyrant rajah she was forced to marry is dead, Kalinda's troubles are far from over. A warlord has invaded the imperial city, and now she's in exile. But she isn't alone. Kalinda has the allegiance of Captain Deven Naik, her guard and beloved, imprisoned for treason and stripped of command. With the empire at war, their best hope is to find Prince Ashwin, the rajah's son, who has promised Deven's freedom on one condition: that Kalinda will fight and defeat three formidable opponents.

But as Kalinda's tournament strengths are once again challenged, so too is her relationship with Deven. While Deven fears her powers, Ashwin reveres them - as well as the courageous woman who wields them. Kalinda comes to regard Ashwin as the only man who can repair a warring world and finds herself torn between her allegiance to Deven and a newly found respect for the young prince.

With both the responsibility to protect her people and the fate of those she loves weighing heavily upon her, Kalinda is forced again to compete. She must test the limits of her fire powers and her hard-won wisdom. But will that be enough to unite the empire without sacrificing all she holds dear?

    "Love this series!"

Great story with complex characters. I️ love that this story is not predictable.
My only complaint is that the two narrators did not pronounce names the same way. It was confusing at times. The Narrators’ voices were great but pronounced the lead character’s name differently.
This story has romance and plenty of action. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

    "Predictable"

The story itself is really predictable. It's not hard to guess what's happening next and there are still a lot of cliches. What bothers me the most is how the main character is constantly bringing herself down about her looks. It gives the wrong impression to anybody who reads this book. In the end though, the basic idea of the story is really good. I just feel like the author took the wrong turns to get there. Between all the cliches and the predictability of what happens in the story it takes away from how much someone can enjoy it.

"Emily King is really, really good!"

So, I'm not a romance guy by any means, and it's somewhat difficult for me to read in try hat genre. But what Emily King does really well, is balancing out the romance with great action scenes and a well-paced plot. she's also really good at pros and her descriptive details are highly intelligent and compelling.

"This needs to be a movie! "

The first book in the series was amazing and imaginative. The second did not disappoint. Now I must wait for the 3rd!!! Ahhhh! It did take a little adjustment to hearing Devon read by a male narrator but all in all it was a wonderful performance.

    "Great sequel, additional narrator..."

I really enjoyed the sequel and the continuation of the story. The concept was interesting, and kept me coming back for more. My only complaint is that with the additional narrator. Both narrators are pleasant to listen to, and the female familiar from the first book. I wish that someone had noticed in production that the narrators were pronouncing names and locations differently than one another. The female narrator was consistent with the first novel, but the male narrator pronounced names differently, and it was just enough to bug me each time it was pronounced. It seems like a pretty simple concept, to ensure that the narrators are being consistent with one another, but they failed to do so here. This of course wasn't enough to make me stop listening or to not purchase a sequel, but I would hope that they pay better attention to such an important detail in the future.

"Disappointing follow up, but not totally awful..."

I enjoyed the first book very much, so finding the sequel to be a mash up of The Hunger Games' formula and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with the sights, smells, sounds, and names of western Asia trying to cover that up was pretty disappointing. There is even a scene that feels lifted straight out of HP4, substituting a jungle for a lake. It effectively killed all my interest in the series, but others might enjoy treading familiar ground with a good pace and characters that cannot seem to grow up (much like the world around us). Interestingly, my septuagenarian Mom liked it very much, but it must be said that she's never read the material that made this feel so derivative for me. The reader had a nice voice, but read so slowly that I found myself drifting off. All in all, it told me this was supposed to be a stand-alone book that has been Slinky-ed into a series. Again, I didn't absolutely hate, I just expected so much more originality because of the promise of the first book. :(

    "Good read"

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and was concerned that the second book would not be as good. I'm glad to say that I was wrong. Absolutely a great read. You find yourself pulling for the heroine in several places and know that the ending has to be great. But then ... you have to wait for the third book in the trilogy. Good series.
