Summary

A sharp psychological thriller that's just right for fans of Pretty Little Liars - this story will seduce, mislead, and, finally, betray you.

Kay Donovan has skeletons in her closet, but who doesn't? The past is the past, and now Kay's a star soccer player whose group of gorgeous, pedigreed friends run their private school with effortless popularity and acerbic wit. But when a girl's body is found in the lake, Kay's carefully constructed life begins to topple. The dead girl has left a memento, a computer-coded scavenger hunt, which, as it unravels, begins to implicate each of Kay's friends, until Kay herself is in the crosshairs of the murder investigation. At this school, no one is quite what they seem...even Kay.

Debut author Dana Mele has written a taut, sophisticated suspense novel that listeners will tear through and not stop talking about.

Critic reviews

“This juicy prep-school thriller has queen bees, super-cliques, and hints of PLL and Gossip Girl. But if you think you’ve got every plot turn figured out, think again: the drama is just getting started.” (Seventeen Magazine)

“[A] whirlwind, fast-paced YA mystery.... Not only will Mele’s gorgeous, melodic writing have you entranced, but the layered mystery of it all will have you scrambling to turn the pages to see who-dun-it.” (Buzzfeed

"Steeped in scandal and profound tragedy, this is a dark and thrilling look at female friendships, the pressures of scholastic success, and mental health.... A classic and frightening tale of betrayal and mental illness told in a fresh and contemporary way, this book is difficult to set down for even a moment. It is an intricately designed, beautifully written, and extraordinarily chilling story." (School Library Journal)

Good

I wasn’t sure about this book at first because it sounded similar to lots of other books like this but the story was good. It was a good listen however the plot line was very easy to guess and I found myself bored at the end because I already new how it was going to play out.

Nicely gripping story

Really well performed and a strong story that keeps you listening. It’s hard to follow the chronology on occasion and I had to rewind parts to figure out when things had happened. The motivation for Kay to do what she does feels a bit weak and I found it hard to believe that almost every girl at the school was gay or bi. Maybe I just went to the wrong school! Definitely worth a listen/read.

🌟🌟🌟🌟

A slow burning mystery and thriller that managed to captivate me till the end. So many twists and turns and nuances that held my interest as the story developed. None of the characters are particularly likeable, they are selfish and awful people, but somehow still sympathetic!

So many motives and suspects that I really could not pin down my own prediction, as I kept thinking, but what if?

The story moved slowly at times, but I just had to keep listening to get the answers! It wasn’t the most exciting reveal ever. The moment it all clicked wasn’t really a huge surprise at all. What was the most interesting was the final twist at the end, the reason she went along with it all in the first place! Brutal!

🎧 The narration just fit the character of Kay completely. The voice was cold, unsympathetic, and detached almost. It fit her perfectly. Never letting the drama of it all take over!
