Summary

The two-time Newbery Honor winner Gary D. Schmidt delivers the shattering story of Joseph, a father at 13, who has never seen his daughter, Jupiter. After spending time in a juvenile facility, he's placed with a foster family on a farm in rural Maine. Here Joseph, damaged and withdrawn, meets 12-year-old Jack, who narrates the account of the troubled, passionate teen who wants to find his baby at any cost. In this riveting novel, two boys discover the true meaning of family and the sacrifices it requires.

Crushingly beautiful

Among other things, I am an 8th grade teacher and former foster parent. This book is devastatingly realistic; I felt gutted at the end; wrenched by feelings in the way that only a master storyteller can evoke. I wish every student (and every adult) could read this book and understand that Joseph is sitting in our classroom every day.

Hold your heart

Can't say this is a happy story, but it definitely hit me right in the heart. One of those books that makes me wish I were the characters. The performance is spot on.

Another look at coming of age

What did you love best about Orbiting Jupiter?

I liked that it approached the coming of age story from a different approach. It isn't the stereotypical coming of age perspective. You have a kid who comes from foster care, who has had a real conflict, who has to navigate teen life alongside conflicting and difficult emotions. I appreciated that it was a story a different demographic of kids can relate to.

Which scene was your favorite?

I wouldn't say a scene in particular moved me as much as the relationship and bond formed between the two boys. I didn't expect that.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end, which I won't spoil!

Everything about this book is excellent from the writing to the narrating. But prepare to have your heart ripped out.
