Publisher's Summary

The Selection meets Reign in this dazzling trilogy of interwoven novels about three girls on a quest for freedom and true love from number-one internationally best-selling author Richelle Mead.

In the second installment of the number-one New York Times best-selling Glittering Court series, Richelle Mead goes beyond the glitz and glamour, delving into the dark, political underbelly of their world through the eyes of one girl who dares to fight for her freedom.

A refugee of war, Mira was cast out of her home country and thrust into another, where the conditions were inhospitable at best. In a life-altering twist of fate, she is given the chance to escape once more, and she takes it, joining the Glittering Court.

For a select group of girls, the Glittering Court offers a shot at a life they've only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. But for Mira it means further persecution, not only from her fellow Glittering Court jewels but from her suitors as well - men she would potentially be expected to give her life to.

By day she goes through the motions, learning the etiquette and customs that will help to earn her anonymity, even making a couple true friends in the process, the forthright ladies' maid Adelaide and the ambitious laundress Tamsin. But by night Mira hatches a different plan entirely - one that, if exposed, could get her hanged in the highest court of Adoria.

Midnight Jewel is the extraordinary story of a girl with few options who courageously forges a new path, finding love, passion, lifelong friendships, and maybe even a way to freedom.

    "Fun but ridiculous"

Well, I loved this book, but I must say that it jumped the shark about halfway through. I was able to ignore it and finish the book and it was great fun, sort of like eating mental candy. Not literature, not deep, but shallow and sweet.

    "I can't wait for the 3rd!!"

I just finished listening to both the first Glittering Court and Midnight Jewel in less than 10 days. I couldn't stop listening, they were both fantastic. I love how the two stories intertwine and you see different perspectives. I'm dying to know what is in Tansin's letters - I'm assuming we will find out in book 3. I'm a relatively new Richelle Mead fan but her character development and imagination is unmatchable!! At times it's almost hard to believe it's fiction vs history. 5 stars!!!

    "Not Richelle Mead's best..."

I have never been more disappointed in a Richelle Mead book. I am typically a huge Mead fan but this book was a drag..I kept waiting for it to get better but then it was over. I'm not sure I'm into the whole same story different perspective thing b/c for me this book was just not that great. It might have been the narrator but honestly she wasn't bad so I don't think so. if your looking for a great Mead book try her Dark Swan series.

"So much adventure and heart packed into one!"

I wish I could give this book more stars. It had me hooked from the first chapter and kept me cheering Mira on the whole way through. The first book Glittering Court was good, but took me a while to finish. Mira was my favorite character in that book so when I found out Midnight Jewel would be focused on her I was ecstatic. The narrator did such a great job bringing the characters to life. I can't wait for Tamsin's book!

    "Awkward Writing, Awkward Narration"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    Die hard Richelle Mead fans.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    A romance novel.

How could the performance have been better?

If the narrator could keep her accents consistent and better performed. The protagonist has an accent in the book, and the narrator made her sound like five different nationalities within five minutes. It was, frankly, horrible.

What character would you cut from Midnight Jewel?

Tom the Pirate. What a weird side-plot, and her dealings with Tom made me dislike Mira, the protagonist, quite a bit.

    Any additional comments?

The book was a disappointment, and the narrator did it absolutely no favors. I regret buying this audiobook.

"It's Richelle Mead. One expects no less."

Read in one sitting! I had been looking forward to this book for so long, and it didn't disappoint. Even if the plot has inconsistencies, you can forgive them because Richelle creates believable characters and explores great themes. That being said, her plots contain a lot of complex elements, too: politics, mystery, fights... Her books feel real in ways others don't. You can't pitch these novels as "heart-pounding thrillers" or whatever advertisers like to say; they're subtle and quietly worm their way into your heart. I can read this when I need comfort, inspiration, or relaxation.
