Summary

Kel has finally achieved her lifelong dream of being a knight. But it's not turning out as she imagined at all. She is torn between a duty she has sworn to uphold and a quest that she feels could turn the tide of war.

Unrelentingly realistic in its depiction of the horrors of war, Pierce provides exquisite details of the weaponry, topography, and culture of her world, and her control of a voluminous cast of characters is masterful.

Great Story, Slightly Better-than-Average Reader.

I love Tamora Pierce's works and Protector of the Small is actually my favorite series, but I found the performance by Bernadette Dunne a little distracting. From book to book the voices (namely Owen's) aren't consistent, and Ms. Dunne frequently puts the primary emphasis in a sentence on the wrong word, either changing the meaning of a sentence or removing it entirely. Specifically I can recall one sentence in either Page or Squire when she is listing the contents of Kel's travel pack given to her by her mysterious well-wisher; the written sentence is admittedly a little confusing in its comma usage, but the problem is when Ms. Dunne reads "...a hank of light, strong rope..." as "...a hank of light; strong rope.." changing the meaning from "a short length of sturdy, lightweight rope" to "a short length of light, and some strong rope," which is nonsensical. There are other examples of these strange malapropisms though I can't think of any more off the top of my head, but they do happen frequently enough to be distracting.

Loved it! Has a few mispronounced words and names

Great story, love Pierce 's stories based in Torttal. Narrator mispronounced a few things, but not too noticeable. If you like this series check out Tricksters Choice and Tricksters Queen; by far my absolute favorite books.

Great book

Love the book. Love all of Tamara's books. Don't like the performance person. Don't like the way she she has picked to read (voice) people in the books

Love

Tamora Pierce is a wonderful author amd this series is my favorite of hers! I really enjoy the narrator but some people say that Bernadette Dunne emphasizes certain sounds. I didn't notice this at all but you might if you're more particular about it.

awesome story!

This was an amazing story about a strong young lady. I couldn't stop listening, the narrator voice was pleasant as well. kind of sad that this is the last of Keladrys story though.

Protector of the small gives great lessons to anyone who reads it!! Lessons in civility we have lost! 😖

The entire series just as the Lioness quartet before is written with great wisdom and humanity that has been lost!!

A Delight

Bernadette Dunn is simply a delight as a story teller. Her character voices and intonations bring an already brilliantly written story to life.
