Summary

In spare, understated prose heightened by a keen lyricism, a debut author will take your breath away.

A new state, a new city, a new high school. Mike's father has already found a new evangelical church for the family to attend, even if Mike and his plainspoken little sister, Toby, don't want to go. Dad wants Mike to ditch art for sports, to toughen up, but there's something uneasy behind his demands. Then Mike meets Sean, the new kid, and "hey" becomes games of basketball, partnering on a French project, hanging out after school. A night at the beach. The fierce colors of sunrise. But Mike's father is always watching. And so is Victor from school, cell phone in hand. In guarded, Carveresque prose that propels you forward with a sense of stomach-dropping inevitability, Rafi Mittlefehldt tells a wrenching tale of first love and loss that exposes the undercurrents of a tidy suburban world. Heartbreaking and ultimately life-affirming, It Looks Like This is a novel of love and family and forgiveness - not just of others, but of yourself.

Love the story, but the writing?

Would you try another book from Rafi Mittlefehldt and/or Will Ropp?

No, his writing style isnt for me.

Which character – as performed by Will Ropp – was your favorite?

The little sister Toby, the voice and writing was 10/10.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

MAYBE. I wouldnt be opposed to it.

Beautiful and Painful

"It Looks Like This" is a book that makes a statement. Showing that the pain from rejecting a child can have repercussions that hurt everyone - yourself included.

What a wonderful roller-coaster of emotions!

What did you love best about It Looks Like This?

'It Looks Like This' is a tragically beautiful story of a teen's journey in overcoming intolerance to fully acknowledge and accept his-own truth. With deliberate pacing, the author masterfully builds tension and suspense that grips so tightly you won't be able to put the book down. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I clinched my fist in anger. What a wonderful roller-coaster of emotions!

Young Love vs. Religious Conservatism

Poignant coming-of-age tale of young love and loss. A cautionary tale for parents everywhere. Melancholy and sweet.
