Summary

If 14-year-old Cassandra Reed makes it through her first day at Miss Castwell’s Institute for the Magical Instruction of Young Ladies without anyone discovering her secret, maybe, just maybe, she’ll let herself believe that she really does belong at Miss Castwell’s. Except Cassandra Reed’s real name is Sarah Smith and up until now, she lived her whole life in the Warren, serving a magical family, the Winters, as all non-magical “Snipes” are bound by magical Guardian law to do. That is, until one day, Sarah accidentally levitates Mrs. Winter’s favorite vase in the parlor....

But Snipes aren’t supposed to have magical powers...and the existence of a magical Snipe threatens the world order dictated during the Guardians’ Restoration years ago. If she wants to keep her family safe and protect her own skin, Sarah must figure out how to fit into posh Guardian society, master her newfound magical powers, and discover the truth about how an ordinary girl can become magical.

feel good story

I love Molly Harper's adult books and liked this one just as much. Initially the slightly mad accents put me off, but I soon stopper noticing it.

Incredible as always

Molly Harper is a fantastic writer, and Amanda Ronconi’s talent is incredible. Combined, they are a recipe for success. Highly recommend

The accents killed me

The story is good but the accents, oh my god.

It does get better once we get into the school portion but up until then I cringed every time the main character spoke

I didn't expect this

This book wasnt what I expected. I found it reminiscent of April White's books. I really enjoyed it. I hope there's more.

Sucked into this world!

Very much enjoyed the story and the implicit introduction of social structure etc. it all meshed very nicely. Very interesting take on magic and power as metaphors for class, poverty etc. Despite some geographical clues I have absolutely no idea what regional accents the narrator was aiming for. Indeed a wandering minstrel could not have accumulated so many! The accents changed part way through sentences. Not the first book written by an American and set in England but with American English. But I absolutely loved the story and characters so I can almost overlook these issues. So happy to have found a new series to enjoy.

promising start to new series (apart from accents)

I really appreciate the narrators effort but 'Northern' english accents slid between Scouse, Welsh, Scottish, irish and a bit of dick van dyke but once Sarah/Cassandra went to school it was much easier to listen to. Good start to a new series.

Persevere with the narrator

I know the English accents are a bit dodgy but if you keep on going you don’t notice it anymore and the story takes over.

It’s worth it.

Brilliant!!

I really enjoyed this. It was a great start to a promising new series. It was a somewhat different style for Molly Harper but very good! I look forward to the next in the series.

American Author Syndrome

The book suffers from having an English Setting and Characters written by an Americn Author

It is full of everyday Americanisms that grate horribly in a supposedly English setting. Sidewalk, candy, pants, vest (the latter two refer to underwear in England, not the trousers and waistcoat the Author intended)

Also, much as Amanda Ronconi is an excellent narrator, it would have been better to give the job of narrating a book set in England, and full of English characters to an actual English narrator rather than expecting an American to fake the accents consistently all the way through.

The story itself is great, and the naration is good too - allowing for the understandable accent slippage, but I felt the need to mark down for the Americanisms and American narrator.

fantasy of manners

quite enjoyable! some big emotional hits with family, and lies and deceit, some dystopian vibes, alternate history, with magic and manners and finishing school, some mystery and romance woven through.
