Publisher's Summary

Listen to the timeless classic about the beloved Anne Shirley, a red-haired orphan with a fiery spirit, before the new NETFLIX series premieres. This audiobook includes a foreword by Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid's Tale, celebrating the 100th anniversary of this children's favorite!

Eleven-year-old Anne Shirley has never known a real home. Since her parents' deaths, she's bounced around to foster homes and orphanages. When she is sent by mistake to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she wants to stay forever. But Anne is not the sturdy boy Matthew and Marilla were expecting.

She's a mischievous, talkative redheaded girl with a fierce temper, who tumbles into one scrape after another. Anne is not like anybody else, the Cuthberts agree; she is special, a girl with an enormous imagination. All she's ever wanted is to belong somewhere. And the longer she stays at Green Gables, the harder it is for anyone to imagine life without her.

"[Anne is] the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice."—Mark Twain

    "Enchanting"

Anne was always a favourtite of my mothers, and then mine when I was a teenager, but returning to her in my 30's I found the book as delightful as ever. It is such a well written story of life in a small canadian village, both witty and moving by turns. I actually laughed out loud on the tube. The book is read beautifully and the forword very interesting. I would recommend it is listened to by ALL 11 year old girls. They will love it.

"Fabulous for girls of all ages!"

A lovely enchanting story, I'm in my 30s and enjoy it as much now as when I first read it at 9! This is a great reading of it that I can thoroughly recommend and I will be looking for more by Kate Burton! Try it if you want an easy listen that is heart-warming but not too sickly sweet. For girls of all ages (8+).

"Must buy for any Anne of Green Gables fan"

The narrator did an excellent job of capturing the personalities of the characters in this novel. Audio was clear and the voice fluctuation was anything but short of superb. You are easily transported to Avonlea and can visualize all of Anne’s friends and escapades. The chapters ran smoothly from one to another without the annoying pauses that can distraught from the story line. I wish this narrator did all of the Anne Series.

    "Classic !"

This is such a delight, a story of simpler times and (mostly) decent people. I loved this charming children's classic. The narration was perfect.

    "Narrator spoiled the experience"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

No. The book deserves its place as a classic in children's literature.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Burton’s performances?

No. She too frequently paused in mid-sentence (even where there wouldn't be a comma) and restarted as if she were beginning a new sentence. It affected the continuity and understanding of the story.
Also, her voice for Anne was way too high-toned, fast and childish for an 11 year old, and the tempo for Matthew was exaggerated to make him sound slow-witted.

    "Excellent!!!"
What did you love best about Anne of Green Gables?

This is one of my most favorite stories since my childhood and still I do love it in many many ways! I love how Anne enjoys her life with all her heart in any situation. She makes lots of mistakes and along with them she meets various kinds of people and grows letting her true beautiful self shine. It's been so enjoyable and encouraging whenever I read. I have my book almost from thirty years ago. It's been my treasure. I used to listen to this recording after I purchased it when commuting, but now I'm reading the book playing this recording. It is amazing!!! I should have done this before. I understand details far better and I enjoy it multiple times! Excellent performance of the narrator!!

What did you like best about this story?

I love Anne, and all the people around her. In our life we always encounter many kinds of people. It is vividly written how our life goes unexpectedly and excitingly with those people we meet...

What about Kate Burton’s performance did you like?

Oh she did an awesome job!!! I love watching this film, but she never made me disappointed being too different from that beautiful fim. She performed everyone's voice very decently and well. I love love this, and would like to look for other work of her reading especially for Anne series.

    Any additional comments?

Thanks to the author for the great story and to the narrator for an amazing performance!

    "Passionate to the core"

I love this story! I read the whole series as a child and they were all my favourite. Now with reacquainting myself again with Anne, I realise that my love for this story hasn't gone. I hope to share this with my daughter and hope that she too appreciates the story for all it can give.
The narrator is obviously just as passionate. She's reading from her heart and soul. Truly something I could listen to over and over again.

    "Like an Old Friend..."

The unabridged story made me laugh and cry as though it was the first time I met Anne (with an E) and all of her bosom friends and childhood struggles. I'm so glad I was able to go with Anne and Dianna through this haunting and reminiscent tale one more time. This production was like spending the day with an old friend!

I love listening to this book over and over. It's so sweet. The different kinds of love that Anne comes across and how special each kind is. Great story!

    "Beautiful and Enjoyable"

This is a favourite. It is the first book in such a moving series that I love. Lucy Maud Montgomery had written this spectacularly and the narrates it reads it so expressively that you feel like you're there in the moment. Love this!

    "Narrator and Introduction Issues"

This is a charming story; my issue is more with the foreword, which should have come with a spoiler alert: there's a huge plot giveaway that I resented hearing in advance. I also think the narrator, who has a pleasant voice and does the other characters well, tried too hard by giving Anne's voice a reedy, flippant quality that grates after a while.
