This book, friends to lovers storyline, has the usual comfortable formula and should have been up there with the best of indulgent reads. The audiobook is narrated well and the theme of holidays and mixing past and present timelines worked to tell the story of Poppy and Alex's friendship/building romance.
Unfortunately, though, I found Poppy quite unlikeable. She's deeply self centered, overly dramatic and somewhat dim witted so I ended up irritated by her before the end of the book. She's also a total minger - her aversion to showering was completely distracting for the whole story after the reveal. Three showers a week seems reasonable but not when you've been talking about sweating in unbearable heat all day and not taking a shower after a swim in a public pool is just unforgivable. Ew. I couldn't help but imagine her being just a little gross for the majority of the story and it definitely ruined some of the magic for me.
Comfortable enough but main character is a bit of a minger
