Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The Pizzeria Vesuvio looks like any other Italian restaurant in London - with a few small differences. The chefs who make the pizza fiorentinas are Sri Lankan and half the kitchen staff are illegal immigrants.

At the centre is Tuli, the restaurant's charismatic proprietor and resident Robin Hood, who promises to help anyone in need. Nineteen-year-old Nia, haunted by her troubled past in Wales, is running from her family. Shan, having fled the Sri Lankan civil war, is desperate to find his.

But when Tuli's guidance leads them all into dangerous territory and the extent of his mysterious operation unravels, each is faced with an impossible moral choice.

In a world where the law is against you, how far would you be willing to lie for a chance to live?

A wonderful book and beautifully read

A wonderful book

A gripping novel that is short but very sweet about people on the margins of society. A reminder that a kind word and a smile to the stranger in the street is better than the reverse.

The novel also reminds me of times in my life when I have felt alone and on the margins and the help I have received from strangers some of whom have become friends so thank you.

Wanted to like this so much more than I did

I'd read several very glowing reviews of this book - but after a slow start it warmed up and then cooled at the end. It really is very dull at the beginning and the ending is fairly unlikely.

the writing is rather lovely, but the characters just didn't quite come alive for me. I have a great love for sri lanka and always want to support new writers - but even these two interests couldn't make this enjoyable. I was very glad it's short - even finishing it at this lengh was tricky. I'm going to return to. But may keep an eye out for the next book from the author - though as I'm sure the reviews will be good... it'll be difficult to tell if it actually is...

I do feel a bit misguided by the glowing reports and then a very average, granta novella feel to the whole thing. As though it wasn't quite finished. Or someones MA writing final piece. Ok, shows promise, needs another rewrite
