Summary

Yoga focuses on meditation, pose, breath, and overall control over the mind and body. In this practice comes the road to enlightenment, the understanding of karma and reincarnation, and the explanation of the external mind-images in comparison to the true self and eternal wisdom that connects everything. It is through continued practice and dedication in meditation and the other methods of seeing beyond the external that the sacred text expands spiritual knowledge. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is one of the main sources of inspiration for these practices.

This is a new translation and verse-by-verse commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and it aims to simplify the language and make it accessible for audiences both new and old to the subject.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are broken up into four books:

  • Book I: On the Contemplation of the Spirit
  • Book II: On the Discipline of the Spirit
  • Book III: On the Divine Power of the Spirit
  • Book IV: On the Freedom of the Spirit

Other than verse-by-verse commentary, this translation also provides commentary on a general overview of each of the four books in the Sutras. Piecing together each section, the road to enlightenment and the eternal wisdom of Yoga is explored with focus on the distinction between the external man and the spiritual man. The guidance of practices and dedication is retained without the confusion of Sanskrit and dated translations that rely heavily on the poetics of the verses. Both the literal and the figurative meanings of more complicated verse are expounded upon, and commentary avoids indulgence on the overly-intellectual with preference towards clear and actionable instruction and knowledge.

Spirtual Guidance

Before Buddhism and before formal Hatha Yoga, Patanjali presents this guide of knowledge. Maybe it is based on early Vedic, but it is based on his direct knowledge further.

Recommend looking at your options

The author provides a translation that easily speaks and follows with thoughtful, meaningful commentary. When I bought it, I was hoping for just the Yoga-Sutra, what I got was much more and I'm grateful for that.

Nofluff

Incredibly insightful. I got it somewhat painful to know as I am new to the language but the included English recommendations were helpful.

Extremely useful

It's also a very detailed and easy to understand the translation of the yoga sutras compared to others. I can also see this as a good resource for Yoga workshops (not just teacher training) or for individuals looking to better their understanding of Yoga.

understanding of Yoga

This book is both inspiring and practical. As spiritual seekers, there is a temptation to reach out for more and more teachings to perhaps find those magical words that will set us free.

I couldn't get a refund for this book

Maybe this is a good book, I don't know because I could not understand a word of what the reader was saying. I carefully read the reviews because I was on the fence about the narrator. I wanted to cringe when she pronounced Patanjali and hoped she would never say it during the reading. She does it a few times. But, the book made no sense to me even when I tried slowing down her reading. I have gained no knowledge from this book at all, maybe if I could have read it, it would have made sense. I could not even give you a summary of what I heard. Something about yoga book 1 and 2 and blank, blankity blank. The author sounded sincere in his intro which was the audible sample given. But the rest of the book made no sense to me and I think that's why the audio sample was not any part of the book. I'm sorry to leave such a bad review. Could I have been the only one that thought so?

Great

This is a wonderful, thought-provoking book. It's short, but I like a book that says what needs to be said without a lot of extra fluff. I run a Yoga Teacher Training program and I plan to add this to my required following this.

Guide with Translations

It is a book about the history itself throughout its long history. This book is great for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of where the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali have come from and their recent prominence on the world stage.

how to find eternity

this is the third audible book of patanjali sutras but I've listened to and I've read the sutures themselves many times. But this was the best interpretation and she makes the point of removing the Sanskrit words, because as much as I like them, most people are not familiar with them. But she does a very good job of anglicizing the vocabulary. That's funny. The interpretations are interesting and novel to me. But since I'm doing this as a concordance, I got a lot out of it and will probably listen to it again immediately. The narrator's voice is soft and sophisticated and English but she still botches pronunciation of patanjali is name it's only an hour and a half so I paid for it instead of using a credit. Good deal.
