About this listen

In the tradition of Wrench and Twelve Years a Slave, this harrowing yet utterly unputdownable story follows an enslaved woman forced to barter love and freedom while living in the most infamous slave jail in Virginia.

Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Brown was promised her freedom on her eighteenth birthday. But when her birthday finally comes around, instead of the idyllic life she was hoping for with her true love, she finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil's Half-Acre, a jail where slaves are broken, tortured, and sold every day.

Forced to become the mistress of the brutal man who owns the jail, Pheby faces the ultimate sacrifice to protect her heart in this powerful, gripping and heartbreaking story of one slave's fight for freedom.

A completely transfixing pause-resister about love in the face of darkness, hope in a world of hate, and the heart-wrenching price of survival. Perfect for fans of The Help and The Forest of Vanishing Stars.

I enjoyed the storyline of the yellow wife. I didn't listen to it all at once as i needed breaks in between due to the intensity of the experiences. I do admire the courage and strength of Pheby. despite everything she fought for her children and for the people around her. She didn't get the happy ending she had wished for but I believe she could live peacefully knowing her children will live free.

An incredible harrowing story deeply rooted in the experience of those who were enslaved and how they survived. Compelling and engaging. The narration is so engaging too.

This is a beautifully written story of survival in the American slave era. Be prepared for brutal images of the treatment and degradation of black slaves. But this powerful story with strong female character has a seem of hope, courage and survival running through its core. I really found depth in the story and would highly recommend it.

Poignant and powerful
