Summary

Straight out of the pages of the legendary vampire novel Dracula comes a demon hunter for the modern world.

Mina Murray and Jonathan Harker had a son. They named him Quincy. His guardian angel calls him Q. Dracula calls him nephew.

Demons call him The Reaper.

"There are things in this world that men and women aren't meant to understand. We aren't supposed to know these things exist, much less how to fight them. The things that go bump in the night, the monsters in the closet, the shadow out of the corner of your eye - that's where I live."

Definitely worth a listen!

Overall:
I have to say I really enjoyed this book. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect but it turns out that Quincy is a cross between a vampire slayer and the excellent character of Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files.

The book is not just one mission, but a series of investigations which are, due to the characters that participate within them, well linked. Each has a certain uniqueness to them and I never felt that I was just listening to a duplicate of the previous investigation. And, with every investigation, I felt I learnt more about the characters and the world in which they were living in.

I’m not a great lover of blood and guts but, although the description of the ‘encounters’ are vivid, I never had to stop listening or avoid my food as the story unfolded.

If you like the unnatural, the mysterious and a good investigation then this book is for you. You will enjoy as Quincy battles with the creatures from the other planes and come to learn that although he thinks he is a sole operator, he really needs others around him.

Performance
I have listened to books which have been spoiled by the narrator. In fact, I have given up on books because of them as well! But this is definitely not one of them. The narrator’s voice is empathic and descriptive and it is easy to know which characters are talking without the need for the ‘said’ word being used at the end of every speech. Definitely a great narrator – well done – I was impressed!

Story
I’m usually not a fan of more than one book in a series. After reading the first book I only ever go onto the next if I am seriously gripped by the plot. I was a bit concerned when I suddenly realised that the first investigation had finished and I wasn’t even halfway through the book. But I really didn’t have anything to worry about. Although the investigation changes the characters, and overall plot, continues to be developed.

I would say that there are three or four main characters and it is really interesting how these interact with each other and how, as the book progresses, you get to know a little bit more about each one. It is only as you progress that you realise that the separate characters which you have been introduced to are inexplicitly connected.

I am always wary of supernatural-themed books. Sometimes they can stray from real life so much that they become more fantasy than a thriller. But this book keeps both feet firmly in reality and just allow you to glimpse into the supernatural which is disturbing and somehow more real.

This book really kept me engaged throughout and I looked forward to listening to each and every part. Overall, if you like the supernatural, the weird and the wonderful, then this book is for you. You will enjoy how well you get to know Quincy and how the other characters develop and weave into Quincy’s life. A definitely thumbs up from me!

A joy to listen to

What does James Foster bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A wonderful performance by James foster, he draws you into the story from the very beginning. I was hooked within the first minute.

Good fun

A bit Buffy, a bit X-files and liberally owning that in the text, a demon hunter who happens to be Draculas nephew teams up with a cop and eldritch agent to solve murders and save the universe. It’s nicely done and good fun.

Such a good series

After Dresden (an unavoidable parallel) I didn't think I'd find another series with a protagonist who's exploits I'd enjoy as much as Harry's; thankfully I was wrong.
with a fantastically original setup, a really eclectic mix of supporting characters and a brilliant grasp of dark humour, this series matches the Dresden series punch for punch and often surpasses them thanks to the lack of repetition shown in Harry's use of his abilities.
Each story was thoroughly engaging and enjoyable and I always looked forward to what the next chapter would bring.
Additionally, an audiobook lives and dies by it's delivery but I'm pleased to say that narration & production throughout was exemplary.
Love this series and have enjoyed the subsequent releases just as much.

Something Different

The is my first time experiencing anything by John G. Hartness, and he has impressed me no end here. Year One is a collection of Byte sized novellas, that combine into a great episodic series. Treat Year One as a novelised TV show, and you'll have a good handle on what to expect here. Characters are slightly on the tropey side, but work well when evaluating the whole book. Take some sort of Vampire Hybrid Wizard (connected to Dracula) and throw him into a modern day setting fighting the paranormal. Add in a little X-Files, some Warehouse 13 with perhaps a sprinkling of Buffy/Angel, and that's Quincy Harker. Not the most fleshed our character in the world, but it just works. Each story is different, and the characters grow and progress throughout. My only criticism would be some of the endings are a little weak, but the main story elements make up for this. Will be interested to try out more of the series. Narration - spot on. James Foster has a slight Cam Clarke vibe to him, and really brings the story to life. Fully Recommend
