Summary

The country is in turmoil. With the capital city occupied, half a million refugees are on the march, looking for safety on the frontier, accompanied by Lady Flint's soldiers. But escaping war is never easy, and soon the battle may find them, whether they are prepared or not.

Back in the capital, Michel Bravis smuggles even more refugees out of the city. But internal forces are working against him. With enemies on all sides, Michael may be forced to find help with the very occupiers he's trying to undermine.

Meanwhile, Ben Styke is building his own army. He and his mad lancers are gathering every able body they can find and searching for an ancient artifact that may have the power to turn the tides of war in their favor. But what they find may not be what they're looking for.

Magic and gunpowder collide in Wrath of Empire, the explosive second novel in the Gods of Blood and Powder series.

An improvement on Sins of Empire

I listened to this on Audiobook, to sustain me through numbing hours of marathon training. It says a lot when you want to run a couple of miles more to hear what happens next!

I enjoyed Sins of Empire a lot, but found it too derivative of the original trilogy to rate it more than four stars. My main bother being characters that seemed too direct a replacement of the first's protagonists. But I take it all back, as in Wrath, each (Michel Bravis in particular) follows their own, exciting path, with strong narrative and character development. Really tense and well written throughout and a strong evolution of the Godstone thread.

But... a few too many familiar faces and two of the three main stories ended too conveniently, one by Deus Ex Machina and the other by inverse Deus Ex Machina, if there is such a thing. Left me feeling slightly deflated by the Epilogue.

Promptly regaining half a star for the most exhilirating fight in any literature: Styke vs Door.

Performance by Christian Rodska was excellent. Well narrated, good voices and accents, that weren't too exaggerated. Very clearly read, which is great when running, as it's difficult to track back on anything missed.

Looking forward to the next!

Best so far

Once the gods are left behind, the story and characters take center stage and it's all for the better. I really liked the first book in this arc and this one is even better. If you have come this far in McClellans word just jump back in and enjoy. If you have not read him before its your choice to start at the beginning. That series is great, but uneven. Or start with the first book in this series. The author has evolved beyond focus on a few characters using their superpowers to a mix of independent storylines within the main one that interweave seamlessly. Its just great fun to follow.

Excellent

Gripping, compelling and gritty storyytelling without the melodrama of say, Martin. Not as irony laden as Abercrombie's work but a brutal look at flawed personalities who play to their strengths. great magic system that is both purposely vague and yet refreshingly simple. Was engaged the whole way through and was surprised when the book ended.
the performance was memorable and felt earthy and yet somehow grand. All in all loved it.

Wrathfully Excellent.

Book 2 : Wrath Of Empire by Brian McClellan.

This is truly a brilliant and amazing series, the character development is so good. Brian McClellans Powder Mage world is just one of those stories I don't think I would ever get bored reading. The setting, plot is excellent and it is so action packed with battles, calvary charges and sorcery that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat right to the end. I love the political side of it, the betrayals, invasions and power hungry individuals that you just love to hate. My favourite character is Mad Ben Styke, his blood lust for revenge, his love for his Lancers and his no fear never die attitude. Landfall has fallen to a Dynize invasion, set on claiming back what was theirs. But Vlora, Taniel, Ka Poel, Olem and Benjamin Stykes must twart them from getting theirs hands on what could be very detrimental to Fatrasta, the Nine and maybe the rest of the world. The narration by Christian Rodska is so good. If you haven't read this series yet, I very highly recommend that you do, I absolutely promise you won't regret it....😁💥🖤

Privileged!

With Landfall now occupied; millions of refugees on the road; Lady Flint and Ben Styke on their own missions, the stage has now been set and the plotting and action comes fast and furiously.

I look forward to the last book.
