Summary

Often the story of World War II is told as if it began September 1, 1939, with Germany's invasion of Poland. But the empires involved in the war had been in conflict since Japan's invasion of China in 1937. When the Japanese attacked the American airbase at Pearl Harbor in 1941, the war encompassed the world, only to end with a new weapon for a new age. In this historic account of the war, interviews with eyewitnesses from all the major theatres of the war, captured in the British Movietone Archive, interlace memories of events, providing living testimony to those moments in time.

taught me more than school ever did!

excellent and gripping. i learnt more than 8 years of history lessons ever taught me. nearly listened to the whole 11 hours in one go, but eventually spread it over 3 days. i suspect its a radio version of something that was originally made to watch/for tv - russian and german eyewitness accounts are without translation - i guess because there would have been subtitles if watching. small criticism really - this is FAB!

For beginners only

This is not a bad book, but only for beginners who want a general overview of WW2. It presents a couple of little known events, but otherwise a standard explanation of the timeline.

Great Enjoyable Summary

Great production, I found it highly enjoyable and I really liked how it emphasized the epic scale of WWII across all seven continents. They really talk about the sacrifice of the participating nations, not just the main ones but also address the sacrifices of the British Commonwealth nations greatly, which to me get heavily glossed over because people see it as just "British" on maps and sources. The only negative thing I have is that wished the interviews were translated somehow, it does feel at times they performed this for a TV show and then moved it to audible form. I do not speak German, Japanese, Russia, or Hindi so an English translation would have been helpful.

Could've been better.

The clips of interviews were a nice touch, but we aren't told who's been interviewed. The only upside is, new informaiton about WWII is revealed, besides things many already knew.
