Long ago the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land for the radiant glory of their lord.

Summary
In a realm where wizards rule, the ambitious contend for thrones that grant the power of a god. How can one defeat a god?
Jerrell Landish is a thief, clever, creative, and conniving to the extreme. His legendary exploits force him to use the name Jace just to remain inconspicuous. When he accepts a contract to acquire a secret, enchanted amulet, he discovers the item has already been stolen. To satisfy the leader of the Thieves' Guild, he must track down the amulet and complete the ultimate objective:
Assassinate Wizard Lord Taladain, a man with the power of a god.
Rhoa is an acrobat, diminutive, agile, and daring. Armed with the Eye of Obscurance, she sets out to accomplish the unthinkable. Haunted by a troubled past, she cannot escape a single, all-consuming desire.
She would risk anything to see Lord Taladain dead.
Taladain's daughter, Narine, is a princess who recently graduated as a master wizardess. However, her father and brother seek nothing but power - one would use her to strengthen his position, the other views her as a threat to his future.
Can she navigate troubled waters with danger lurking at every turn?
Eye of Obscurance is the first entry in Fate of Wizardoms, a fantasy epic filled with magic, adventure, and intrigue, perfect for fans of Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, and Michael J. Sullivan.

Loved it!
I offered to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, and the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great series, I can be very critical of narrators. Especially when books have a single narrator required to speak with different voices for multiple characters. Most cannot do it without having some errors where they use the wrong 'voice' for the wrong character. Travis Baldree does a great job in narrating all voices this book. It was a very enjoyable listen and I didn't have any issues distinguishing between characters.
As to the story, I am not one to give a lot of specific story details since I feel you should read the story for that. However, I will say that it is book 1 in a historical fiction series where some of the characters have magic. As with most such books, some choose to use it for good while others are greedy. It has great character development and story line that included several twists I didn't see coming. You won't be disappointed if you give it a try!
I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Magical and Funny
The story was compellingly with interesting characters and decent world building. A good mix of storytelling, comedy and action. The only complaint I had was nit picky, some scenes were repeated almost word for word with a different point of view, but after a couple of times I enjoyed that added view.

Perfect
I love this book. The story is addicting and the narrator perfectly captures the soul of it. I had previously read the book so I was delighted to find that the narrator told the story the same way I read it; well, except Jace. I think I made Jace out to be slightly less arrogant than he actually is but I actually like the "real" Jace more.
I definitely recommend this audiobook!

Clever!
A clever thief is bested by a training magician. They were after the same amulet and the same goal. They needed to use it to bring somebody of high power down. Somebody who has been corrupt for a long time and was bringing everything down. They eventually decide to work together to increase the chances of their mission succeeding. I really did enjoy this book. There were parts of it that I got a little lost and overwhelmed in. It was a lot of information to take in all at once. Part of me wants to go back and actually read the book the next time around to see if that does any good. Other than the overwhelming feeling, I really did enjoy the story. It was compact with adventure and suspense. Two of my favorite categories when it comes to stories like this! I don't remember any of the characters names. I feel bad for this, but I am horrible with names. I didn't really feel a connection to any of these characters. I empathized with them, but it wasn't easy to fully understand the things they were going through. I don't think this is an issue with writing. I think this is an issue with my personal life experiences. Other people might find a connection with the characters that I could not. They were some fierce and determined characters. I can tell you that. This book was narrated by Travis Baldree. I'm not sure if I've ever listened to anything he's narrated before. I can say that I plan to listen to other books he's narrated. I also hope that he narrates the rest of this series. He did a pretty amazing job with this one. I felt like I was in the world with them living the story with them. I really did enjoy the story very much. I didn't love it, but it was pretty amazing. It was full of adventure and magic. It was also filled with violence and doom. As per any adventure story. I am looking forward to getting my hands on the rest of this series. I'm also looking forward to going back and rereading it for a better grasp and context of the story.

GOOD READ, LOOKS TO BE A GOOD SERIES
Eye of Obscurance (Fate of Wizardoms #1). my sixth read from author Jeffrey L. Kohanek. Well-written with intricately developed characters you can invest heavily in and the storyline with its intricate twists & surprises as the tension & suspense ratchets up throughout the book’s length. 300 pages but reads even longer with the attention to detail written into the story. Kohanek’s fantasy worlds have become one of my favorite fantasy reads. I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Travis Baldree . Owning both the Kindle & Audible editions I was able to follow along while being read to. I look forward to reading more in this series. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

A good start of a new series
...and a first time experience with another author.
I really enjoyed the varied and well-rounded cast of characters Jeffrey L. Kohanek created. Each of the young protagonists were raised in troubling environments after tragedy befell them. Jace, the master thief, was forced to fend for himself after being orphaned at a young age and learned his trade on the mean streets that crafted him into an unscrupulous character. Rhoa was orphaned after her loving parents were sacrificed to a horrible fiery death under a cruel wizard lottery system. Narine ostensibly had all the benefits afforded nobility but was basically unloved and ignored by her powerful wizard father and hateful older brother. The last of the lost youths was a dwarf, Rock, who was exiled from his Dwarven under-earth domain, never allowed to return.
Jace, Rhoa and Rock are forced to join into a less than trustworthy alliance to kill Narine's wizard father and end his cruel reign over his realm. They are joined by a grandfatherly master story teller of indeterminable age and set out to get 'er done.
Along the way, the author provides interesting character development segues for each of the primary characters that enhance the listeners understanding of the characters which invites the listener to become invested in their participation.
Combine all of this with Travis Baldree's superb ability to tell a story and it doesn't get much better than this.
