Summary

I wasn’t always the bad guy....

Once upon a time, I was simply Veronica Neill: daughter, sister, phoenix. But now I’m all alone, and life as the Falcon - an avian shifter and acquirer of fantastical things - is dangerously sexy and fun.

Some might even call me a thief, just never to my face.

But when my latest acquisition is stolen before I arrive and a gruesome murder is blamed on me, I've got a choice to make. I can get taken in by the hotter-than-hell agent sent by the Death Enforcement Agency and let them charge me with a crime I didn’t commit, or wait for my bloodsucking client to realize I've failed at the job for which he hired me.

I don’t like either door, so I'll take the window instead. Time to track down the real killer and clear my name.

If I don’t solve this murder, and fast, then I might just be facing a lifetime in a grim prison. Or worse, a lifetime of servitude to the man who hired me, a man who’s turning out to be more dangerous than I realized. And my kind lives for a very long time.

If you loved Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunters, Ilona Andrews’ Hidden Legacy, or Seanan McGuire’s InCryptid series, then you will devour The Last Phoenix series. Scroll up and buy to start the adventure today!

Wings of Fire is the first book of seven in The Last Phoenix series, a kickass urban fantasy containing fast-paced action, snarky humor, sexy grim reapers, horrific vampires, a hearty dose of swearing, and a healthy splash of slow-burn romance.

Fast-paced & Entertaining

Wings of Fire is a wonderfully written, fast-paced and adventurous urban fantasy romance that captures and holds the attention from the very start. The storyline is super entertaining, unpredictable, packed with excitement, murder, action, slow-burn romance, and plot twists. The characters are very well-developed, both appealing and intriguing. Veronica is a kick-ass heroine, the last of the Phoenix race with an inclination to steal shiny and valuable objects. The romance element is more of a slow-burn, building up as the series progresses further. I definitely enjoyed the story and getting to know the characters, and I'm looking forward to the next book. Also, to note, the ending was great and with no cliffhanger. Joanna Roddy did an excellent job with the narration. Her cadence is smooth, the reading was clear and precise, and her portrayal of the characters was nicely done. All in all, Wings of Fire was a very enjoyable listen, one I'll recommend.

Great new series

This is a new author and a new narrator and I enjoyed listening. The story was good and I liked the characters and the fact it was a different shifter than other books made it a unique listen to me.

ok

I thought this was entertaining, but a little on the shallow side. Veronica tells us she's badass because she's trained her whole life to be. But you don't really feel it. It's just something we're told and pops up conveniently when needed. Need weapons...oh look, she has a secret stash. Need to get around a security issue...oh look, her BFF is a hacker genius. Need to fight demons...oh look, she happens to have a demon fighting sword. Need to fight vampires...oh look she happens to have wood filled bullets. But nothing about her feels like a hardened, trained warrior or someone who has had to live the sort of life that would require it.

I liked the 'love' interest well enough, but he's a cardboard cutout with the personality to match. The villain is evil for the most cliched reasons ever. I bet if I told you their gender alone, you'd be able to guess their motiviations. And I'd figured out the twist at the end very early one.

And lastly, on a purely personal pet-peeve sort of level, "Wings of Fire: A Kickass Urban Fantasy With Romance (The Last Phoenix, Book 1)" is pretentious. What the hell is that "A Kickass Urban Fantasy With Romance?" It's not part of the title. That's not where you'd put a tag line. It's just this random assertion in an unexpected place.

I know that all sounds negative, and certainly the book could have been less cotton-candy like, but I did enjoy it for the mere escapism of it.

Note: I received a free audible code for this book. I chose to listen and review it.

Great urban fantasy

This book is fast paced and hard to put down. The story is well developed and the characters interesting and captivating. The story will keep you in the edge of your seat guessing until the very end when some shocking revelations reveal the person behind the stolen box & murder!!!

Narration was well done and brought the story to life.

I’m glad the story wrapped up nicely and did not end in a cliffhanger. Although, I do want to know who was behind her brother’s death.

If you enjoy a fast paced urban fantasy with action, mystery, adventure, suspense, and a touch of romance, this book is for you!

Slow burn romance but she is a phoenix

Veronica's parents have passed on, her bother commuted suicide, she is the last of her race, and she loves hunting for shiny things so she became an acquirer of things for other people. Everything was going well until that one mission where she was framed for murder and for stealing the item that was stolen before she got to steal it. Now she has to prove her innocence , for this crime, and evade the law until she can but can she outrun the grim reapers and outfly an angel

This is a slow burn buildup to a romantic series. Like many other romantic series the first book sets up the romance and lets you learn and experience the characters. I enjoy that it dose not end on a cliff hanger, yes I want more and will listen to more but the story ends at a good point with a solid ending while giving you enough to want to hear what Veronica will get into next and will she get the grim reaper she is falling for and still find someone or someway to carry on her race.

This is the first book I have listened to of Stephanie Mirro but I am waiting for more. This is also the first time I have listened to a story read by Joanna Roddy but she has a very nice voice and wonderful inflections defiantly gives a great voice to the story .

Urban Fantasy

I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is my favorite genre of books - Urban Fantasy with a kickass heroine and a bit of romance. That's how this series is even described - it's even awkwardly in the title. Wings of Fire, being the first in the series, gives us a glimpse into the world with a bit of backstory, but I do feel like there's so much more to learn. More to learn about the girl who is Veronica, a procurer of magical artifacts for hire. More to learn about her family, the reasons why she is the last of her kind.

I liked Veronica, but we don't get too much depth of character here. She's brave, strong, fights, and has some internal struggles from her brother's death and her trying to keep her Phoenix identity a secret. I would expect this character to grow over the course of the series, as with my favorite more-than-just-a-reaper series, but just from book one, we end up with a more superficial view of our heroine.

There was quite a bit of fast plot, which you know by now I'm a fan of. Much happened in this short read/listen, some surprising, some not. There was betrayal, lies, kidnapping, and servitude, and of course some murder. We have a creepy Master Vampire, some reapers that we don't know if we can trust throughout the story, a mastermind with an evil plan to capture and own the rarest species for obviously selfish and sexist reasons, and then there's being framed for a murder and being hunted by the Death Enforcement Agency. There are shifters obviously, and angels, and I already mentioned reapers, and vampires, so your mixed bag of awesome paranormal creatures. You know, a typical urban fantasy romp. But, being a very short book, it all happened fast, and sometimes conveniently, and sometimes it felt like something was missing in the details.

The bit of romance was definitely lacking in this one. It's described as a slow burn, and I wonder how many books it burns through before getting anywhere. We did start with a "no way never would I ever with his one he's not even alive", and end with "well I'm curious about him somewhat and surprisingly attracted to him so we'll see" so I suppose there's more build up in their relationship in future installations of the series.

Now let's move on to the audio narration since I listened. I very much enjoyed the audiobook narrator. Great voice, pacing, tone.  I very much enjoyed the performance and will be looking for other books narrated by Joanna Roddy.

I enjoyed that the book ended with the story nicely tied up, with some questions left unanswered to be further explored in the future books of the series. I'd be interested in reading or listening to the next one.

Love, love, love it!

Wow! The writing, the characters and the plot are all fantastic! If I could give 6 starts I would.
I love the tension and play with the grim reaper from the DEA. The story is hysterical yet there's a solid mystery and a few twists. The author has the ability to string words together in a fashion that is enteraining and bulds character. This story caught my attention and kept it. I'm not one to read or listen to a story more than once but with this one I just might!

Loved it! Need book two ASAP...

I loved Wings of Fire: A Kickass Urban Fantasy With Romance (The Last Phoenix, Book 1) by Stephanie Mirro and narrated by Joanna Roddy! Fun and fast-paced action to keep you listening straight through. If you enjoy an urban fantasy that hooks you right off the bat, this is for you.

What’s it about? Veronica “V” is on a job when things go south and she finds herself framed. Trying to clear her name and stay alive, she pairs up with a grim reaper, Thane Munro of the Death Enforcement Agency. Enter vampires, fae’s, angels, a manticore, magic, and more- it leads you on a wild ride. Did I mention V is the last Phoenix and an avian shifter? The minor characters were all awesome too. I was happy to find multiple stories unfolding, lots of action, and it wasn’t the typical “shifter have to mate” romance (more along the lines of he’s hot). There’s no cliffhanger, but one minor story line is left open for sometime in the future and will be huge (I expect). Lots of potential for this series to be fantastic!

The narrator, Joanna Roddy, is new to me and I enjoyed her narration. Pace and tones are perfect. I have no complaints.

I highly recommend this book if UF if your thing. I liked it so much that immediately after finishing, I went to purchase book two only to find it’s not yet on audible. I hope it’s in the works! Both the author and narrator are new to me and I know I will be listening to more of them.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings (***may contain some spoilers***): some violence, death, theft, memories of death of family members (parents, brother), suicide of brother mentioned multiple times (MC believes brother was suicidal due to bullying but finds out later that is not what happened later on). Language used: Fx55, Sx18.

I cannot wait for book two!

A well-written fantasy story is a thing of beauty! In that vain, this listen is stunning!!

Veronica, the main character, was every bit a badass, as the title suggests. Everything about her was a joy to listen to. Roll in angels, and vampires, and faeries, and the special is guaranteed.

The narration was insane!! I often think the hardest stories to narrate are fantasy. The narrator is tasked with making the unbelievable believable. Roddy made me a believer.

There are several stores in the series and I cannot wait!!

What a good book!

This was such a good book. I really enjoyed the storyline as well as the narration. The story is lighthearted for the most part but does have some heavier parts. I hope to continue this series.
