Summary

Explore the captivating life of William Wallace!

You might recognize him from Mel Gibson's film Braveheart.

Sir William Wallace (c. 1270–1305) was - and is - a Scottish national icon of the highest order. Born as the landless younger son of a minor nobleman (Sir Malcolm Wallace), his startling rise to become a military and historical legend, an exemplary patriot, and a national hero is an embodiment of the underdog narrative that many people identify with in film and real life.

Wallace earned a place in history for his successful efforts in leading the Scottish resistance forces who had been rallying against English rule since Scotland was conquered in 1296.

Some of the topics covered in this book include:

  • Mysterious origins
  • Coming of age in crisis
  • Defiance and compliance
  • The prophecy
  • Uprising
  • Love in a time of war
  • The Battle of Stirling Bridge
  • Invading England
  • The guardian of Scotland
  • Defeat at Falkirk
  • An outlaw once more
  • The execution
  • And much more

National hero

Our son is a dedicated fan of William Wallace so when we were in Scotland recently we visited Stirling Castle and this book brought the history of a common man who became a national hero.

Great story but terrible narration.

The historical insight into Wallace’s life is brilliant and to my knowledge very accurate. But the audiobook is let down by the poor narration, in particular, the pronunciation of the towns and city’s. For the historical references it’s worth a listen.

Good account.

Sounded like it was being read by a robot which was a shame as the details were very good and enlightening. Obviously I knew that the film Braveheart was ridiculous but it was good that the film was scorned. Lots of details about Wallace were interesting and cleared up the fact.

Unusual pronunciation

Really if you are going to narrate things which relate to Scotland, you need to have enough connection with Scotland to understand how to pronounce names and places.

Good factual book terrible narration.

An interesting story ruined by a narrator who could not pronounce any of the place names correctly. This required frequent rewinding to try and work out where he was referring to. The Family names were also frequently mispronounced causing confusion. I almost gave up but, it was thankfully short.

Terrible pronunciations

The narrator does not know how to pronounce any of the Scottish place names, again and again almost every single name is wrong; Edinburgh, Glasgow, Roxburgh, Celtic, Berwick, Loch Lomond.

Shocking narration

I think if you’re going to give an historical account via audio then its critical you get the pronunciations correct. The book was narrated by an American who just didn’t get some pronunciations wrong he got them all wrong and I mean all the towns and places which you would feel is very important when telling a story about history and a pivotal moment in Scottish heritage .. very very disappointing narration

interesting

So if you are looking for Brave heart, go elsewhere. If you want a very good look at his origins and the period, and all that is actually known about him, this is a great resource.

MacFarland

Very interesting to see where the movie and Blind Willie's account differ. The history is stronger, of course, as it contains all the true events which led to the eventual crown of the true king of Scotland.

Everything The Title Says It Is

I love the movie Brave Heart and have always wanted to learn more about the man that inspired it. I figured this relatively short audiobook would be a good place to start. I am not disappointed. I loved every minute of it, except the intro, which I found to not only be a spoiler, but kind of unnecessary for a short audiobook, as well as the fact that it is more of a summary fitting for the conclusion. If you're the least bit curious, just pick it up. For the price, you can't go wrong. Just do it. You'll be glad you did.

Pretty impressive.

Not really familiar with this Scottish knight, but I got curious so here I am. There are a lot of things I found out about him like he is one of the leaders in the First War of Scottish Independence. How he defeated an army that took place in Stirling Bridge and how he became a hero.

Finish it in one sitting.

I was able to follow through the footsteps of William Wallace with this complete piece. It turns out there are so many things I have yet to discover. And because of this almost brilliant work, I finish listening to this in one sitting.
