Summary

Beth Baxter always dreamt of being an author. Unfortunately, fate has a twisted sense of humour so rather than writing books, she now sells them in a second-hand bookshop. With middle-age approaching and her life unfulfilled, Beth is at least grateful her forthcoming marriage to Karl is worthy of hope — or, so she thought.

When her fiancé’s sordid past catches up with him, Beth finds herself embroiled in a sinister game of hide and seek. As her life is torn apart and all appears lost, Beth is thrown an unlikely lifeline when a former gangland fixer called Clement crashes into her life, offering to help.

Unfortunately for Beth, there is one minor complication with her saviour — Clement claims he died in 1975 and must help Beth as penance for sins committed in his previous life.

With just seven days to avoid a fate she can’t bear to contemplate, Beth chooses the lesser of two evils and reluctantly joins her deluded, politically incorrect companion on a quest across London in search of a solution.

Will this unlikely partnership succeed? Will Clement ever come to terms with paying five quid for a pint? And will Beth ever learn the truth about who sent Clement?

Story not too bad but narrator dreadful

The story is pleasant enough - a twist on a familiar trope. I loved Clement, but found the main character, Beth Baxter, incredibly irritating. This irritation was compounded by the narration of her character. The narrator was fine for Clement, but for Beth, her voice grated and made the listen very hard work. She also lost her "accents" from time to time - the blackmailer's voice changed significantly from chapter to chapter, which broke the flow somewhat. Perhaps she would be an interesting voice to listen to in another book, but I didn't enjoy the narration in this book.

Aside from that, the volume of the narration varied significantly, ranging from audible to almost inaudible from chapter to chapter, which meant that it was difficult to listen to when I wasn't in a completely silent space. Even with my audio device set to full volume, it was difficult to hear. I realise that this is probably more to do with a technical issue than with the narrator herself, but not what I expect from Audible.

Fun plotline

I really enjoyed listening to this book for the most part but Beth's trusts issues and always jumping to a negative conclusion, got rather exasperating three quarters of the way through.

Loved this in parts

I really liked the story and development of the book as it went on. Unfortunately, I found the main character extremely frustrating at times and found it hard to root for her when she was being extremely unreasonable or overlooking obvious signs of things to come. I listened to the Audible book AND read the Kindle version and would say it was 50/50 either way.

I loved the character of Clement and am now excited to see if there are more books with him in, I think I remember reading that there was!

From the writer of the 86 fix

I loved this book and cannot wait for the next instalment to arrive on audio.
The narrator I found was brilliant, very relaxing to listen to, only one problem was the production was not at its best. With the change of chapters the audio volume was considerably lower than the end of the last chapter in a few places, this soon levelled out as the chapter progressed. This didn’t deter from the enjoyment of the book.

The story was fun and moved along at a very quick speed, the main characters I found were very likeable.
Keith Pearson is another British author that I put on my must read list, I love his fun style of writing that reminds me of Nick Spalding.
The ideas are quirky and put together well. There are some Laugh out moments, If you have read the 86 fix I highly recommend giving this one a go.
