About this listen

A man with no memory is found dead and suspicion clouds the community. Inspector Jimmy Perez must hunt for a calculating killer in White Nights, the second Shetland mystery from Ann Cleeves.

Now a major BBC One drama, Shetland, starring Douglas Henshall.

On Shetland, the launch of an exhibition at The Herring House art gallery is disturbed – a stranger bursts into tears, claiming not to remember who he is or where he comes from. The next day, Inspector Jimmy Perez finds his dead body in a fisherman’s hut.

Initially, it seems to be a straightforward case of suicide – yet this is no desperate act. Instead, it soon becomes clear, this is the work of a cold-blooded killer. As Perez investigates, he finds himself mired in the hidden secrets of a small community. Then another body is found.

Perez knows he must find the killer before another death occurs. But it is midsummer, an unsettling time when the sun never really sets in Shetland and nothing is quite as it seems . . .

Critic reviews

A most satisfying mystery (Peter Robinson, author of the Inspector Banks novels)
The best living evoker of landscape
Cleeves’ setting is beautifully evoked . . . this is as finely crafted and satisfying as a well-made piece of furniture – just look at the workmanship (The Times, on Wild Fire)

Kept me guessing right to the last chapter. Really caught the sense of a small close knit community. Loved it!

Great Story!

I love the story in the landscape, always a swist in the tail. brilliant.

Another great read from Ann Reeves.

I enjoyed this but not as much as the previous book.
Still well written, with engaging characters and a plot twist I wasn’t looking for!
Give it a go!

Shetland murder mystery

Really enjoyed the sense of place and the understated storyline (no OTT scenes of gratuitous violence despite a relatively high body count). I'm so fed up with ludicrous car chases and gun battles - this had all of the drama, tension and mystery without the unrealistic high-octane nonsense often served up in police procedurals. Absolutely recommended.

Lovely sense of place
