Summary

DCI Jim Daley is sent from the city to investigate a murder after the body of a woman is washed up on an idyllic beach on the West Coast of Scotland. Far away from urban resources, he finds himself a stranger in a close-knit community.

Love, betrayal, fear and death stalk the small town, as Daley investigates a case that becomes more deadly than he could possibly imagine, in this compelling Scottish crime novel infused with intrigue and dark humour.

Denzil Meyrick was born in Glasgow and brought up in Campbeltown. After studying politics, he pursued a varied career including time spent as a police officer, freelance journalist, and director of several companies.

Beginning with Whisky from Small Glasses, The Last Witness and Dark Suits and Sad Songs, the DCI Daley series have all become Scottish Crime best sellers, with all three entering the Kindle top 10.

Whisky from Small Glasses reached number two in the store in the summer of 2015.

Edge of the seat.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was Gripping with some very gruesome murders. However there was also some very amusing dry Scottish humour & the dialogue & characters lightened the darkness, so much so that I found myself chuckling away in places. The story kept my attention throughout, & all the characters were believable & had Depth. A great crime thriller, I have already purchased the next D. C. I Daley story. Recommended.

M&M's

Meyrick and Monteath combine to produce a quality new police procedural series. This one isn't breaking huge new ground within the genre but if you have room for another troubled Scottish detective in your life this really isn't a bad choice. It has charm in that it sets big city characters in a small tightly-knit town and the mystery is well constructed. Daley in particular is well rounded, in more ways than one, and his sidekicks and back story add character. The town and its inhabitants work well.

In places I did feel that some things were a bit to obvious and that I was having too much explained in terms of the characters were thinking when it seemed all to clear. That aside, I enjoyed it and it is set up for an intriguing continuation.

Good new detective story

Whilst moments of the story line where predictable, maybe I’ve listened to too many, but overall the writing was good, characters were ones you could get behind. Narrator was very good and made the whole thing enjoyable.

Another great performance by David Monteath

What made the experience of listening to Whisky from Small Glasses the most enjoyable?

The narrator brings each character to life. His ability to create so many different personalities with their unique voices and accent is second to none.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The lead character. As much he is a trouble personality he is not as hopeless as many other police officers.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

After a night of reconciliation the falling back into old behavioral patterns.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did listen through it in 1 day.

Any additional comments?

A good solid crime story brought to life by a brilliant narrator. I am looking forward to next instalment.

Fantastic Read/Listen

This is my first read of Denzil Meyrick books, DCI Daley, it will not be my last one. Fantastic characters, super story and even better Narration. David Monteath is one of the best I have listened to in a long time.

The story is believable, very well written and when listening you feel as if you are there. Although this is a well written and gritty crime drama, its also very funny at times. I listen with ear phones, periodically I would just burst out laughing and my wife would just look at me as if I was mad.

DCI Daley or DI as he was at the start of the book is a good leading character, supported by DS Scott and a young DC. DS Scott is what you would imagine an old time Glasgow DS to be like, he does not suffer fools and has a mouth on him like toilet. DCI Daley, is the complete opposite yet they get on like a house on fire.

Several twists throughout the book, however I guessed the killer early on, but this did not stop the book being great.
