Arriman has decided to marry. His wife must be a witch of the darkest powers… To find the most fiendish, he holds a spell-casting competition. Glamorous Olympia performs the Symphony of Death and conjures up a thousand plague-bearing rats. The magic of gentle Belladonna, the white witch, goes hopelessly wrong. She produces perfumed flowers instead of snakes. Bats roost in her hair instead of becoming blood-sucking vampires. Belladonna longs to be an evil enchantress - but how?©1979 Eva Ibbotson (P)2009 BBC Audiobooks Ltd Humorous Fiction Kurgu Literature & Fiction Scary Stories Science Fiction & Fantasy Fantastik Korkutucu Büyücüler Komedi Sihir Büyücülük Sihirbazlık

I downloaded this book for Halloween listening for my 6 and 4 yr old boys - crossing my fingers that it wouldn't be too "girly" (as it's essentially about the search for love) or too scarey.

In fact this book is fantastic. Yes it does have lots of atmospheric descriptions of devilish mazes, hedges dripping blood and unpleasant familiars, but it's done in such a matter-of-fact way to seem normal for those characters. No nightmares from either of my boys. Even when some of the spells go wrong, they were gripped rather than scared.

The right side of spooky

This book was every bit as enjoyable as the first time I read it - to myself, as a child. A real trip down memory lane! Prunella Scales totally did it justice. A real nostalgic treat!

Every bit as good as I remember

Eva Ibbotson creates characters who are engaging and believable despite being witches, wizards and ghouls! One of my favourite stories, love listening to it whilst doing other boring things like tidying up!

One of my favourites
