Summary

Shortlisted for the RNA’s Goldsboro Books Contemporary Romantic Novel Award.

A strange encounter. An unlikely friendship. But will it survive when they both know the truth?

As single mother Leah struggles to get her children ready one morning, the doorbell rings. Standing on the doorstep of their terraced house in Whitley Bay is a well-dressed stranger, Clio, who feels an emotional tie to the house that she can’t explain. The story should end there, but a long-buried secret is already on its way to the surface...

In some ways the two women couldn’t be more different: Leah’s a mother of two and the daughter of a barmaid; Clio’s a perennially single heiress to her baroness mother’s estate. But where Leah lacks grown-up company, Clio lacks any experience of the real world, and the unlikely friendship sparked by their curious first meeting offers both of them a welcome respite from the routine of their lives.

It is a friendship that will answer questions neither of them knew to ask, uncovering secret stories from the past that have stayed hidden for decades. But will it also be the catalyst for them to finally feel that they belong?

Ok story

Nearly returned this because of the narration. She was mostly whispering and so mike must have been turned up. I could hear all the consonants. T,B and C were quite annoying !! The time zones put me off too. Been better if it said which year it was in now.

Predictable

Predictable story with non descript characters and a fairly ordinary narration. Not an author or narrator I'd rush back to.

Another Imogen triumph!

Relationships, families and the interweaving of lives are staples of Imogen Clark’s novels. This one does not disappoint and the delicate descriptions of how the secrets get disclosed and the people’s connections are revealed are a delight b

Heart warming but predictable

I enjoyed the story, although it was very predictable. I loved the female characters and found it to be a heart warming story. The narration was ok, apart from the terrible attempt at a Geordie accent. Overall it was a nice enough listen though

Too whispering

It may have been a good story but it was hard to listening since the narrated sounded like she was whispering as she read . She has a great voice and all but the level of softness was irritating.

Could not stand to lsten to this reader a moment l

The story seems like it could be decent, but I could not listen to the narration a moment longer, Th inflection in the sentences is all wrong, the sentences are broken up in all the wrong places, and I some times wonder if the reader even understands what she is reading. For a story set in the north east, the accents are all wrong - no-one in Whitley Bay sounds like these characters. The "southern" pronunciation of "Newcastle" grated every time I heard it. And just overall the performance was breathy and irritating. I see the book is available via Kindle Unlimited, so I will finish reading this book the traditional way.

Great Story!!!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I loved how we were listening to just the women's perspectives. And all the women were so likable. The men on the other hand are extremely unlikable. I may have figured out what was going on pretty early, but I still enjoyed hearing the character's journey to the truth. And the last 2.5 hours of listening are absolutely fantastic. Not sure what some of the reviewers were talking about when it comes to not liking the narrator. I thought this narrator was fantastic!! I understood her with zero problems and she changed her voice for each character that you knew exactly who was talking when. Great book!!!

Feminists beware!!

So many things about this book made me scream!!! Even in the 80’s women weren’t this oblivious…. I know because I was there. Please stop writing drivel about women!

Great twists

I am not a huge fan of British readers. But Elizabeth Knoweldon does a great job of bringing the text to life. Her voice can be a bit breathy but I quickly forgave her when the story got intense. A great escapist read.

Story worked everything to good in the end

This is akin to a Hallmark Movie . . . the reader expects a happy ending, all threads tied up in a pretty bow. As long as the reader is aware of that, the story is quite enjoyable.

Amazing imaginative story! Great narrator!

How she did it I don’t know! I kinda thought He was who He turned out to be but still was way surprised how He did it and for so long. But the wife and daughter are the best. I wish all people and rich people and people who think they are rich people would be thoughtful and caring in real life instead of hateful and spiteful
Thank you

Good story, annoying narrator

Story was good, but predictable. Narrator sounded out of breath the whole time which sometimes made her hard to understand.
