Twist! Mild spoiler within

I was given this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.

I had already read and reviewed books 1&2 so started listening when book 3 began.

At the start this seemed to jump around a little but soon settled into its pace. I was NOT expecting that ending, that totally floored me! I can usually spot a twist coming so have to applaud this one. Well written, well narrated, thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you.

A great tale of intrigue and power plays

I listened to all three of these books in record time I think! The overall idea for the book is very believable, you could see our near future turning out like this - a bit Blade Runner, a bit leftover 21st C -type racism, politics and big business all wrapped up in Illuminati-type control conspiracies, fueling fears and divisions for financial gain, religious fanatics with a grain of insight mixed up into obsession...but could they know something we don't?

It's a long listen - there are bits where there's a lot of background story, which was also well written. My preference is for a little less of this, but it certainly didn't stop me listening - hint, it's all relevant to the story.

The listen is very easy though - the narrator is excellent and has just enough of an 'exotic' South African accent to lend intrigue to the story. Loved the use of slang and the lead character's synesthesia - these were woven into the story really, really well and brought in wonderful visualisations.

It's written from the female POV, but with plenty of male POV in their too. Good strong characters you can root for and identify with as well as ones you wish you too could pick up a virtual diamond-tipped arrow and get involved in the action with.

So when I finally reached the end of book 3, I'm left thinking "OK! So where's the next trilogy?!?" I received a free copy of the books to give an honest review and I can say I really enjoyed them all - I'll be on the lookout to buy others in the series

Step into tomorrow's Joburg on a global scale

I loved listening to this collection.

Set in the futuristic, dystopian landscape of Johannesburg - thriving metropolis and melting pot of South Africa - JT Lawrence blends the new and sparkling advancements of the future she's imagined with the familiar, grounding elements that anchored me to the present day. In this world, the world of tomorrow, our deep-rooted problems are still very much in evidence. Infertility, chronic diseases, mental illness, undrinkable water - check. Fear of AI rebellion? Oh, yes.

Boredom factor? zilch. Suspense? 110%. Enjoyment? Absolute.

In short, this boxset is an amazing bargain. Start listening today!

Best steampunk EVER!

No judgements please, but if I tell you I've read all of these books, I've also listened to them all separately, now I've listened to them as one big box set, you'll be forced to draw one of two conclusions. Either I have the memory span of a goldfish, or, these books really are something very, very special. I assure you it's the latter. This story simply takes my breath away. I can't explain, because I don't possess the genius of JT Lawrence with words, but it's like it's real life in the future. All the gadgets, the way of the world, everything, it's so clever and credible. I love Kirsten, Keke, Seth, Silver, Mali, even Betty-Barbara. They're like my family. The whole story is so creative, so mind-bogglingly brilliant. Then, just when you think you've got a handle on how this future works - BAM! and your brain is fried when everything you thought you knew and understood is turned upside down and inside out. Alongside the exquisite writing, the pace of the story is phenomenal, you definitely need to sit down when you listen or you'll be exhausted. By book 3, you'll be lying down, mopping your brow and gulping water. When you've finished the entire set, you'll be convinced someone slipped you something in your drink. IT WILL MESS WITH YOUR HEAD - BIG TIME!! I was all overcome and totally and completely "WTF!!! No way!". I pray that JT Lawrence stays on the side of the angels, because if she decided to go dark, we'd all better watch out. If the When Tomorrow Calls box set was a lager, it would probably be the best lager in the world. Awesome, mind-blowing, enthralling, captivating, fabulous and fantastic. Buy the books today, you can thank me later!!!!

Slow start builds to a strong finish

As a boxset of three normal length books, the first impression of this audiobook is that it is good value, but realistically that is only true if you actually enjoy all three books and luckily that was the case with the first one being a decent enough read eventually and them steadily improving from there through the series.

It was slightly unfortunate for me that the pacing of the first book was further hampered by the jumping around rather than the author focusing on the stronger main storyline, but I persevered with book one and eventually got into it more, neither the second or third books seemed to suffer in the same way and I went through those two much quicker.

The choice of narrator was a good one with her tone and accent nicely enhancing the story and characters in a manner that a more neutral choice would not have done.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable set of books, but if like me you find the first part a little slow, take a break and listen to something else before returning for the stronger 2nd and 3rd parts that really make the set shine.

An incredible near future story!

I loved these stories which feel really different and evolve nicely. I really loved the vision of the future. The tech as well is really cool! I loved the elements that the tech gave to the story from the start where its interesting to taking a really important part in the story progression. Also really solid characters. A great pace to the story which mixes a good level of detail and description to immerse you in the story but also a sense of progression with good momentum. Really compelling characters throughout with a good solid lead.

Fabulous

I absolutely loved this! 27 hours & 3 books. It just flew through. Non stop something was going on.
The characters were so full and living, so real that I got hooked on them & what was going on with them.
The 1st book led us in & caught up with the lives and start of the happenings.
The 2nd book just hooked me so much I was desperate by the end of it to get onto the 3rd.
The 3rd...wow. It was the best and so much happened that I couldn’t believe it all fit in if I’m honest!
No spoilers from me but the ending was just What?! It’s a great set of books & so worth it’s price and time to listen to it.
I will be listening again and if anyone does read this review who could make things happen, this would be a fab movie!
Action packed and such a good story line throughout.

Great Sci-fi Adventure

Normally I do not like to listen to a series since it takes a great deal of time.

But sometimes you have an opportunity to consume a creative and interesting story with characters that you care about.

The vision of our future and the fear that Computers and or its offshoots Robots or Androids or AI beings will run amok and endanger Earth or the entire Cosmos is of course nothing new.

But this Author and the various stories embedded in this series have its own unique take on this forbidding future many of us
fear.

In other words enjoy this series from a South African Narrator and Writer who know a thing or two about futures that go wrong.

Engrossing cyber-thriller. Strong female leads.

It was the description of this trilogy that initially piqued my interest, and after listening to all three books I'm so glad I took a chance on them. I had not read from this author before and didn't know what to expect, but the quality of writing and storytelling are truly quite good!

Kate and Keke live in a future where virtual reality tech is as ubiquitous as smartphones are now. The VR platform serves as a tool to educate and entertain, but being easily misused it is also addictive and dangerous. The reader follows Kate and Keke through a significant passage of time between the three novels. Twists and surprises abound throughout, keeping me glued to my earphones and dreading ever coming to the end of this story. Roshina Ratnam is a truly fantastic narrator here. Her lovely accent is a great fit for the characters, and I easily listened to her for hours on end! If you enjoy darker themed dystopian societies full of LitRPG-worthy tech and gear, and if you love complex female leads who juggle their good nature against the ferocity that their circumstances require, then may I recommend giving this trilogy the same rewarding chance I did.

VERY COOL SCI-FI SERIES/TRILOGY, VERY ENJOYABLE

This series is very interesting, and I love the way they all intertwine with each other, very action packed and thrilling. Like some others, it started off a bit slow for me, but that's to be expected in most cases while the story is set. Very much enjoyed the story and the narration, great character development, very thrilling, really makes you think. Not predictable, keeps you wanting more. I'd definitely recommend this series! :)

An Excellent Sci-Fi Series!

This is a fascinating series! The first book took a bit to get into but once I got about a third of the way in I was so glad I managed to hang in there. It was an amazing listen and so worth the time! Roshina Ratnam did an excellent job with the narration. She really brought the stories to life. Overall, a series well worth your time.

Surprised and in a good way...

I received this box set in exchange for an honest review and found it a bit difficult to write a review.

When I have read a book that I really enjoy, but am unfamiliar with the genre I like to take some time to think about the characters and how they coexist in the world created by the author.
I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued about the world this author has created set in the not too distant future.

With a very story and an equally good narrator I feel it with call for a second listen.

In the not too distant future....

I didn't know what to expect as I started this trilogy. The first thing that popped out was the South African perspective, and accent. I found it refreshing, and easy to listen to. I will say the first book took me a while to get in to, but I was soon hooked. This sci-fi trilogy has a little bit of everything as it tells the story of Katie, the protagonist. Again, it took me a bit to warm up to Katie, but I'm glad I stuck with these books. Solid sci-fi with a few interesting twists. Recommended. A great sci-fi series

This is a great sci-fi series set in a near future South Africa, that infuses everything from LitRPGs to corporate espionage. While the entire series tells a story over a large span of time, each book does something completely different. You get to have these characters you enjoy basically experience three different sci-fi genres while all tieing into an overall story. The world building is great, and the characters are fleshed out and it is thoroughly captivating to blast through this series.

The narration by Roshina Ratnam is great. Her voices and accents help transport you and help you experience the characters emotions. She does a great job throughout the whole series, and I hope she and JT Lawrence can work together again.

Loved the series, and hopefully, we get some more shorts (especially any involving Keke). An imaginative and thoroughly entertaining series.

Really great trilogy

When I began the trilogy it took me a little while to get into the first book Why You Were Taken. I'm not sure what threw me off whether it was the pacing, or the structure of journal entry to fast forward future of whats happening on the story or the accent from Roshina Ratnam which she does an incredible job by the way but something in the beginning didn't click for me. As the story progressed and the characters got more developed I was immediately glad I stuck with it. This is a very unique sci-fi story about a not too distant future. I was not a fan of the protagonist Kate at first and specially in the beginning of the second book How We Found You but as her story kept on and she grew more into her full character I was a fan. All the other characters like Seth and Keke I liked far better however. This trilogy is very good and as I said before I'm glad I stuck with it and I will be looking for more work from JT Lawrence and Roshina Ratnam in the future. I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.
