About this listen
From the brilliant mind of A Touch of Darkness's bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair comes a YA crossover in a darkly unique fantasy world.
Anora Silby can see the dead and turn spirits into gold coins, two things she would prefer to keep secret as she tries to lead a normal life at her new school. After all, she didn't change her identity for nothing.
Hiding her weirdness is just one of many challenges. By the end of her first day, she's claimed the soul of a dead girl on campus and lost the coin. Turns out, the coin gives others the ability to steal souls, and when a classmate ends up dead, there's no mistaking the murder weapon.
Navigating the loss of her Poppa, the mistrust of her mother, the attention of gorgeous and enigmatic Shy, and Roundtable, an anonymous student gossip app threatening to expose her, are hard enough. Now she must find the person who stole her coin before more lives are lost, but that means making herself a target for the Order, an organization that governs the dead on Earth—and they want Anora and her powers for themselves.

Only read this if you are 12.
This is a spooky adventure about the dead and the afterlife. I read a fair amount of YA but this was simply too young for me. In a nutshell, it's about a group of teenagers who can see souls and are trying to figure out a mystery. its full of intrigue, high school antics, and sticking it to the adults. Like Scooby doo for YA.
🌍World building, Writing, and Pacing:
i will say the narrative becomes confusing / a little odd at times. usually, with first person POVs, the reader discovers and uncovers things at the same time as the main character does. but in this story, the MC is aware of some things that the reader doesn't find out about it until later.
The pacing was up and down. Some parts were too slow, and others were just rushed, particularly the ending, as it didn't really make sense at all.
Characters:
First, you have Anora, who could see ghosts but doesn't know what she is. Nor do we, we know she and her mum move around a lot but have no real clue why. I can't say much about the others without giving away the plot, but I feel the characters were underdeveloped and needed more to them in general.
Another part I couldn't get my head around was the relationship between Shy and Anora. It was forbidden, but they were lovers in past lives, so that's why they decided to get together? Did they get together? I'm not even sure. It was too confusing and still doesn't make sense.
💀WHY NO 5 STARS?
I think the book may have just been too young for my tastes. I wanted far more description, more depth, more challenges, and more answers.
💯Would I re-read and recommend?
No, and sadly no.
🪧Final thoughts:
This was my first Scarlett St Clair book, and I'm gutted that I didn't enjoy it. Give this a miss unless you're 12 and just dipping your toe into ya books.

My Rating Systems:
⭐️ DNF
⭐️⭐️
I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another authors hands
⭐️⭐️.5
It was OK. I wish i didn't start this one as It didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetative writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail]
Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to the right people but I wanted more! Sadly, it's easily forgettable with a few issues I just couldn't overlook/get past.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Great book! I truly wish the story had been thought about more, or the author had been given more time as this book is so close to brilliance! I will likely read again and will definitely be recommending to all!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
WOW! Absolutely amazing book! Well written with great characters and a plot so memorable that it will stay with me. I will definitely read this again, I will be recommending it and sharing it with the whole world! Also- I NEED A PHYSICAL COPY!
🔥⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
This is my God level tier. The book must be perfectly memorable, even after reading 50+ more books, I will remember character names and emotions along with the plot. If there is a special edition, then I need to own it! If there is a conversation on books- I'm talking about this!
