This was my first historical western romance, and I absolutely loved it. It's beautifully written, well-plotted with captivating characters. Amelia Smarts's delivery is excellent, the story is told in the span of two-time frames. It began with Wade and Sadie's teen years, the in-between drama and betrayal. The second part is the discovery of unanticipated feelings and romance. Despite the length of the audiobook, the pace is perfect and not rushed.

The narration by Matthew Keyes is outstanding. His ability to produce a broad range of tones is fantastic. Despite the various characters, I could easily tell each one apart. When He Returns is an enjoyable coming-of-age romance, encompassing the importance of family and home. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this audiobook.
