About this listen

Miss Emma Wynn has spent the last year at Ashwick Hall under the protection of Lady Westcliffe. Her uncle and brother think her dead and must continue to do so until she attains her majority. She must prove she is a fit guardian to re-establish herself and protect her brother. When permitted to visit her friend, Lady Eagleton, she is drawn to the reclusive Mr Carne. She suspects, however, that some scandal is attached to him, and she cannot afford to be tainted by association.

Falsely accused of a heinous act, Mr Oliver Carne returns from India a broken man, his name besmirched and his career in ruins. He retreats to the estate his uncle left him in Cornwall, refusing all visitors. But when his neighbour, The Marquess of Eagleton, lures him from his self-imposed isolation, he meets Miss Emma Wynn and begins to realise he might have even more to lose if he doesn’t reclaim his honour.

One of my favourite authors, who always writes stories with so much detail and depth.
This book is the start of a new series and we meet again Eagleton and his wife Nell, from the previous book in the Confirmed Bachelor’s series. They set the stage for the main characters in this new book to meet.
There are secrets and a scandal in the past lives of Emma and Oliver, that need to be resolved before any understanding can begin between this couple.
The author has really woven a plot that unwinds to satisfactory conclusions but my only slight criticism is that I didn’t quite feel the romance between the main characters.
As always beautifully narrated by Helen Taylor.

Excellent narration of an interesting story with engaging characters. The plot is well thought out and rattles along at a decent rate. .

Fast paced and clean

I found it quite difficult at first to get into this book. Although Nell, her husband and stepdaughter were quite integral to the plot we knew very little of their lives although sometimes parts of it were mentioned we never learned their full story so I kept wondering if I had missed a book. Once I got into it, it was okay but there was a great deal of the sub plot missing.

Was there a previous book?
