Strange but Thought provoking.

An unusual storyline which I very much enjoyed.
The narration was good even though the female voices were a little suspect to day the least!
All in all a good read.

What You Wish For

This, the fourth novel by Mark Edwards I've purchased from Audible was another nail-biting treat for the ears. The plot centres around Hastings-based regional newspaper photographer Richard Thompson (yet another character named after a musician, which is a feature of many an Edwards book) meets the beautiful, young and mysterious Marie on a hilltop. He's investigating and documenting alleged alien sightings in the sky over the South Coast; Marie, and her two companions, form part of a small cell of believers. Richard soon falls in love with the enigmatic Marie, who introduces him to the phenomenon of 'visitors' from other planets. All is not as it appears though and Marie's disappearance invokes a series of events which Richard must work through to discover the truth.

Did I enjoy this book? Absolutely - yes, it was classic Edwards in my opinion and contained all of his trademarks - geeky guy whom women wish to seduce!?; Internet trails; seedy goings on and most of all - an attractive flame haired heroine. I was drawn into the story and although it was slightly ridiculous at times, it remained entertaining throughout.

I have now purchased one of Edwards' collaborations with fellow author Louise Voss. I hope it's as good as all of his other work.

A bit disappointing

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I couldn't wait to read another book from this author as I find he is usually very in touch with reality. However I couldn't get into this one. There wasn't a single character I could empathise with or relate to and the story was too far fetched and contrived.

Would you be willing to try another book from Mark Edwards? Why or why not?

Yes because I have really enjoyed all his others.

What didn’t you like about Ralph Lister’s performance?

His attempt at character's voices, particularly female was comical and distracting.

Did What You Wish For inspire you to do anything?

No.

Any additional comments?

Mark - do your heroines always have to have red hair?

Not his best book, I find I drifted off a little

My least favourite but still OK... LOVE all the other books... I rarely read an authors book list I've after and but I only have one of marks books left...

I really like Mark Edwards but this wasn’t his best.

I really like Mark Edwards and have got quite into his books recently.

This book wasn’t as good for me as his others. The story just didn’t really seem to evolve and it sort of just fizzled through with nothing really happening.

I would definitely recommend Mark Edwards as he is a great writer but I would start with something else like ‘The Magpies’.

Awful old manny style narration

Made it hard to ‘get’ the voice of the author. Didn’t think the interpretation of the words was there at all. As usual I feel sorry for the writer as it was pretty unlistenable.

Dreadful

That is a few hours of my life I will never get back! I have listened to several of this aurthor s books and quite enjoyed them, this however is so bad, nonsense plot and even if you like the sci fi style you will not enjoy this.

What You Wish For by Mark Edwards

I dont usually find this type of book interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a format that I like with a beginning middle and an end. It is therefore refreshing to read this book with. Not to many characters, and the ones on the page you can relate too.

Good but not his best

Another easy-to-read, fast paced story by Mark Edwards. This one is exploring the dangers of sinister cults and the strengths of beliefs. Richard's girl-friend Mary believes in aliens. She is completely devoted to this cause. Richard is a non-believer. Then Mary vanishes and Richard goes on a thrilling search to find her leading him to some dark sections of society.
Because of the alien theme I wasn't sure whether this would be my kind of book, but it turned out to be another really compelling suspenseful thriller. I just love Mark Edward's writing style. He creates characters that come to life and you become invested in what is happening to them. Ok, not his best book, but still thoroughly enjoyable.
The narrator did a good job and was pleasant to listen to.

I would have to say that out of all the Mark Edwards books I have read, this is my least favorite.

Aliens and cookie girlfriends

So a guy falls for a pretty girl and disregards her unbalanced behavior. Her belief in Aliens coming to take her and her fellow chosen ones off to paradise in another galaxy. One day she disappears and he follows her all the way to America to find her, even faking belief in aliens himself.

Ok. Enough of the plot. I have read enough by this author (listened) to know that the guy seems to be the same in all the stories. He is a guy who falls almost obsessively in love with a beautiful girl who is somehow not who she seems, who betrays him in some way.

This love I just couldn't buy. Why would the guy fall so hard for someone with beliefs so opposed to his own, someone who is obsessed with her beliefs. So what if she is beautiful? She was a crackpot. Sorry to all you alien believers out there.

Good

Thankfully not a sci-fi. Not my favorite Mark Edwards book but it was still decent enough to finish to the end.

Mark is brilliant

I really have enjoyed all of Mark Edward’s books and he has become one of my favorites. This story was probably my least favorite. I was expected more of a twist at the end, like his others. Overall good, just not my favorite of his.

What You Wish For

Not the best book I have read from Mark Edwards, found it not as exciting as his other books and while the story was not bad, it didn't draw me into it. I still love his books and will definently keep reading them. The narration was okay.

I hope Marie gets eaten by sharks.

This was not an enjoyable book. I feel like someone held a gun to a Edwards' head and forced him to type this one out. Also, the narrator sounds like Bilbo Baggins. Great voice, but unsuited to voice a man in his 20's, any female, and any American. However, my biggest gripe is Marie and Richard's opinion of her. Spoilers head! Basically she's a less loveable Luna Lovegood that the idiot protagonist immediately WORSHIPS for zero reasons. The whole story is him trying to find this girl and I guess adventures ensue? Many times plenty of evidence presents itself that the police would most definitely be interested in but Richard gives up on the police in like the first 2 minutes. In fact, after he quits his job he sees a man murdered, learns that a violent man is likely out to hurt him and a woman he just met, leaves a man in danger in a cult house, and finds the location of missing minors. What does he do? Moans and cries over his (seriously unlikable) girlfriend of 4 months. Makes no effort to help the other people, it's all about child-like batty Marie! She even tells him she left him on purpose and all the stupid, illegal, and dangerous things she's a part of. Dude still thinks she's the sun and the moon! WHY!? I didn't care what happened to anyone by the end of the story and I struggled to finish it. The cat was the most likeable character.
Skip this one folks, but all the others by this author are definitely worth it.

Awful narration! Weird story line...

I tried to keep listening, hoping it would get better...I tried to be objective (it's just not the kind of story I'm used to.) No...it was just bad. The narration was so irritating I couldn't take any more!

waste of my time

I kept reading, thinking it was going to get better. Maybe a plot twist at the end, that didn't happen. The whole story was about a man who feel in love with a woman who believed in aliens and the woman left him. I do not recommend this book to anyone!
