Noam Chomsky is a lucid and eclectic thinker with an overview that has been and is a consistent counter-weight to Globalisation. Focussing initially on the Israeli-Palestinian situation, its antecedents and prospects for the future, Chomsky then ranges far and wide giving well informed, meticulously researched but effortlessly conveyed insights, facts and arguments covering South East Asia, India, South America and Europe. To hear Chomsky on Vietnam, the first Gulf War, Iran and Iraq is to understand that there are so many books to be written and read, so many threads to be followed and so much enjoyable enquiry to be pursued. But it is his comments on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the relationship with Ali Khamenei in Iran, and - perhaps most notably on Hugo Ch?vez and his growing alliance in South America in which Chomsky is at both his most audacious and most enlightening - or is that enlightened (I'm not entirely sure). He notes with objectivity the demise of Daniel Ortega from the integrity of the Frente Sandinista de Liberaci?n Nacional to opportunist....but the charge of selling out the soul could never be laid at the door of the Don of MIT and the free thinking world. If there is a rallying call today, it is the one for intellectual integrity - and Noam Chomsky is the one person who personifies that concept - that he does it in an unassuming, self-deprecating way is testament to how lucky we are to live in the time of Chomsky. His only observations on Obama are that the Democrats in the pre-election era had completely abandoned the issues or positions in favour of the image - ?He looks you straight in the eyes...? and Chomsky?s rejoinder in this 2007 work is ?And says, What?, exactly...? I?m really looking forward to Chomsky?s take on the Obama presidency and the continuing need for revolutionaries and reformist to be tinkerers. Nothing else to touch Chomsky on fine form - and he is consistently on fine form here - Brilliant!!
