He’s the grumpy EMT next door. She’s the lonely artist listening through the wall. When their late-night desires collide, it’s not just heat that rises—it’s everything they’ve been trying to hide.
After a messy breakup, Harper is starting over in a small town, working freelance and learning how to live alone. The one unexpected comfort? The late-night sounds from her neighbor’s apartment—specifically, the ones that involve moaning, swearing, and very little self-control.
Nick doesn’t do neighbors. Or relationships. Or feelings. But something about the woman next door is getting under his skin—and into his head. When their tension spills into real life, one impulsive knock on the wall turns into a connection neither of them can ignore.
What begins as an after-dark fascination quickly becomes more than either of them bargained for. But when Harper’s past resurfaces in the most dangerous way, Nick will have to decide: does he protect his heart, or the woman who’s quietly claimed it?
Perfect for fans of slow-burn tension, grumpy/sunshine, forced vulnerability, and emotionally messy characters who fall hard once the walls come down.

Started What She Heard thinking, "Aww, cute small-town romance."
Ended it feral.
The tension??? OFFENSIVE.
The chemistry??? ILLEGAL.
The emotional whiplash??? THANK YOU, I GUESS.
And can we PLEASE discuss the spice through the wall because... EXCUSE ME?? 🔥🫣

Joe Arden and Marie Hawkins are the narrators and they bring out all the emotions. Arden is Nick, the broken child, the broken adult and the man with a huge heart. Arden certainly knows how to give the feels, and he did just that. Hawkins is Harper, the knocked down insecure woman. Each scene brings her back a little more, and Hawkins used her inflections to let me know exactly what she was trying to get across. These two are fabulous together and this story was perfect!
