Story
Tanner Wallis is nearly at the end of his rope the night Mason Seidel finds him lying next to the mangled body of a cow on the back pastures of the Seidel family's Wyoming ranch. Recently out of the hospital after he and his boyfriend were brutally beaten, Tanner is jobless, homeless, and almost penniless. His desperate hope is that Mason will believe he's innocent of the senseless crime and give him a place to heal, both physically and emotionally, until he can get on his feet again.

Violet Jacobs is fearless. At least, that's what the cowboys she snatches from under the hooves of bucking horses think. Outside the ring, she's got plenty of worries rattling her bones: her young son, her mess of a love life, and lately, her family's struggling rodeo. When she takes business into her own hands and hires on a hotshot bullfighter, she expects to start a ruckus. She never expected Joe Cassidy. Joe came to Texas to escape a life spiraling out of control. He never planned on sticking around.

Seventeen years ago, Fitz Quinn stole my heart. He took my innocence, then left me broken. When a twist of fate brought us together again, I quickly learned even time couldn’t dim our chemistry. Despite the promise I made to myself, the walls to my heart started to crumble. Before I could stop it, I fell for him all over again. Fixing the mistake I made with Cadence all those years ago should be simple. Except it isn’t. Things aren’t the same as they once were. What do they say about opposites attract?

The rules are simple: unattached companionship, toe-curling sex, and a clean break whenever it ends. And either one of us can say the single word that will break it off: Snapdragon. Falling in love is a luxury people like us don’t have. He’s at the top of his field, and I’m at the top of mine. It’s only a matter of time before ambition calls and one of us walks away. But I can feel myself slipping, falling for him, every time he unchains me from my desk; every time he plots against my boss for making my life hell; with every tender touch in the dark of night.

The first time the local basketball star smiled at Elin, she was a goner. It was just so damn easy to fall for the dark-haired hometown hero with his charming smile and strong, athletic build. Thousands of sleepy smiles, aimless drives down country roads, and squeaks of the backdoor after a swing shift later, reality hits. And it hits hard. Falling in love was definitely the easy part. Claire Daniels is good at a lot of things, but dating isn't one of them. The men she dates must have a job on her approved-occupation list. It has to be safe, which means no cops, pilots, doctors, ranchers, and absolutely no firefighters. She's kept to her rules thus far - as long as you ignore the tiny crush she has on Trevor Allen, a crush that cannot move toward anything physical because Trevor is a firefighter and a rancher. Not to mention he's four years younger than she is and the brother of her two best friends. Still, it sure would be nice to have him put out her fire.

Story
Amy Dover’s dream of training horses has come with a price. The pressures of her career - not to mention an oppressive husband and business partner - have sucked out all the joy the horses used to bring her. After her husband’s sudden death, Amy leaves that world behind and takes a job as a farmhand so she can find her passion - and herself.
Summary
Gracen Lowell is on the hunt for a man - but not just any man. He has to be "the one". Her only problem is that no one she’s dated has ever measured up to the charming qualities of her best friend.
Slade Owens knows no matter how much he loves Gracen, he’ll never be what she’s looking for. And he dang sure isn’t going to stick around to watch her fall in love with someone else. Slade leaving the Owens’ family farm for an out-of-state job should put enough distance between the two to allow him to move on with his life and Gracen to search for her happily-ever-after.
Gracen knows asking him to stay isn’t fair. Slade thinks leaving her behind is the only thing to do. Inexplicably drawn together, the best friends must decide if they have what it takes to own up to their feelings...before it’s too late.

What it takes
This was a first for me with both author and narrator.
I really liked the storyline as well as the small town and characters. Gray & Slade had such great chemistry and I am a sucker for childhood friends to lovers stories. I didn’t like that Gray was playing games with Slade, he tried to tell her how he felt and instead of recognizing that he was putting himself on the line and being vulnerable she decided to “test” him and have an inner monologue rant about how he didn’t understand how scared she was to say anything. A lot of drama could have been avoided had she actually talked with him, but then there wouldn’t be a story I guess.
The narration by Angie Morency wasn’t what I expected. I’m used to country twang type accents with books like this set out on farms/ranches, instead she had a mix between a creeper and an old smoker going on that didn’t really help set the story for me.

Lovely, heartwarming story.
Thank you for providing me with a copy of this audiobook, Sonya (so sorry it's taken me so long to get this review written!)
I already ready this book when it was first released on kindle. The story itself is beautiful - Gracen and Slade are like two peas in a pod. I love that the story is not just a straight forward romance. It's full of twist and turns and there are enough heart breaking and heartwarming moment's to keep you hooked!
The audio reading of this book was actually a first for me as I tend to avoid dual point of view books read by a single narrator. however, Angie Morency did such a fantastic job in my opinion. There was a clear difference in her characters and quite honestly it's made me want to give other single narrator books a chance.
Overall the entire experience was great and it was lovely to have to story refreshed after all this time.

What it Takes
I must start out by saying that I expected this to be a romance through the whole story, I never expected it to have domestic violence in it. I usually steer clear of those types of book. With that being said, I appreciate that the author did not get in to more details about it than she did. I actually found myself on the edge of my seat waiting on this jerk to get his karma. Gracen and Slade seem to have been fated from the beginning and everyone around them can see it but them. At times you get so frustrated with the two, but you also have to remember they are young and don't have the experience yet in relationships. And the Australian Sheppard was one of my favorite characters in the book. I love Aussies! Angie Morency did a very nice job bringing this story to life she was a great fit for this book. I personally enjoyed the book!

Gracen💘Slade~Cheese & Crackers 4.5💜Felt Stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is a well written, well told story that tugged at my heart. It shows how a person can be their own worse enemy, allowing miscommunication and stubbornness lead them away from what they really want. Gracen & Slade were best friends, each wishing and wanting for more but not telling each other this. When they do finally talk about their real feelings comments made were misunderstood causing them to think they did not want each other that way. Slade moves away, Gracen moves on with Clint, who turns out to be abusive. After a horrific incident Slade comes back home. Their story and journey to love was not an easy one but I was glad they finally came to their senses and realized they were each other’s everything. Shoutout to Sonya Loveday, domestic abuse/violence is not an easy topic to cover. She did a great job with it. Kudos for including the helpline numbers and letting her readers know help is out there.
I listened to the Audible edition, Angie Mordancy did a wonderful job narrating and telling the story. She performs the voices of all the characters, brings them to life & gives them heart and personality. You can hear the emotions flow from the characters Thank you for this great & entertaining listen.

Emotionally Charged
This friends to lovers story is emotionally charged and left me wanting more! Gracen and Slade have been best friends forever. In love, but too shy to tell each other, Slade takes a job in Montana to give Gracen the time she needs to find someone and time for him to get over her. What no one bargains for is the relationship Gracen becomes involved in. Sonya Loveday writes a story that includes domestic violence with realism and compassion. It's a heavy subject and she hits it head on. I loved Gracen, she was young, yet knew what she wanted. She just didn't know how to get it. Slade, while I understand his thinking made me a little frustrated. There were a few times, I wanted to knock sense into both of them, but this for me is a sign of how invested I am with the story. It's a great listen, and I highly recommend it.
Angie Morency is a good voice for this age. Her narration is full of the first love feelings, the sadness of breakups and fear of violence. She drew me in and let me experience their journey.

A story that grabs you...
I have never really done a audiobook review so please forgive me while I cut my teeth on this one. As with most audiobooks the big thing is the narrator. Angie Morency's voice is so nice and smooth. It lulled me into the story and kept me wanting to listen. Hearing Angie as Gracen's voice painted a very vivid picture.
The story is one of such great love, friendship, loss and a new chance. Two best friends, Gracen Lowell and Slade Owens, try navigating from friendship to lovers. Yet it's too late by the time they realize their true feelings. Thinking he would never have his chance with Gracen, Slade has agreed to a job far away from her in hopes that he will soon forget her and all the feelings he knows will never be able to get over. But life, as it often does, throws him a curveball. Gracen loves him back. Slade, though, is a man of his word. He slinks out of Gracen's life.
Gracen slowly starts rebuilding her life without Slade. She sadly finds out that not every man is honorable. Will the turmoil in Gracen's life bring Slade back? Will they find out how strong their love is when it is truly put to the test?
Loveday has built a story of finding ones strength, abuse, love and second chances that flows so smoothly with Morency's voice that you, as the listener, can close your eyes and see it all happen.

Best Friends + Cheese & Crackers!
What It Takes: A Dirty Road Love Story is a ya romance with a paradoxical exposition. I loved the narative in this southern romance with its sweetness. Character's are compelling with complex personalities. A novel encompassing just the right blend of ingredients. Crossing the line of demarcation, bombshells dropped, and suspense exploding through the pages. I loved the sweet epilogue ending with Cheese and Crackers.
First listen by narator Angie Morency and I'm not sure if she is the right person to narate this book. I did not love her performance, but I didn't hate it. I think the narrative needs a narator who is capable of showing all the sentiments & angst in the right places. I did not feel this narrator gave justice to the emotional bits. Her voice didn't flow though smoothly and tone and pace were middling.

bestfried to lovers romance with a twist
This book wasnt what i expected it would be. I was expecting the sweet typical love story between two bestfriends who finally realize they belong together after being separated but it was a bit more than that and I'm glad. The beginning started off super cute with tons of moments with her and her bestfriend who she was secretly in love with and he secretly felt the same but already made plans to leave town for a job. He left her behind and months go by with no communication between the two and she gets closer to another guy she had turned down lots of times due to her bestfriend. Now that he is gone, she decided to move on and take a chance with the wrong guy.She decided to end things after realizing his true ways that became terrifying but she realized she waited way too long and now it may be too late. I struggled with it in the middle but once I got to the last half of the book things finally picked up again and things got a bit intense with a bit of a dark turn but it caught my interest again and held it until the end. I enjoyed it okay though, even though the characters annoyed me most of the time because they kept going in circles around each other instead of just being up front about how they felt.

So much more than expected.
When I got this one, I was expecting the typical friends to lovers story. You know the one. Boy meets girl, they become friends, they fall in love but neither of them realizes it is mutual until someone finally makes a move and they live happily ever after. While this story does have several of those pieces, it also has so much more. These characters have a hard road and several obstacles to overcome to make it to their HEA. They were very well developed on their own, and it made their relationship with one another that much better, because I wanted them to find their happiness so badly!
There was a bit of everything in this book. Love, suspense, heartbreak, friendship, and a happily ever after. I was hooked from the very beginning and didn't want to stop listening until I got to the end. The narration was really well done! This was my first time, I will definitely listen to Angie Morency again!

Friends to lovers
I didn’t care for the book in the beginning. But I stuck with it and I grew to like it. One thing that made me not like it was the two main characters love each other and they both make it pretty obvious but they’re oblivious to each others feelings. It’s infuriating. Even though it takes a tragedy to bring them together they eventually clear everything up.
The narrator isn’t horrible but I do think she paused while reading more than necessary. Also, I LOVE when I listen to a book and I can feel the emotion from the narrator but I didn’t feel it here and this story has emotional scenes in it that need justice. I’m not going to write the narrator off, I do want to hear more of her!
I also love the fact that the author added helpful numbers at the end! Prompts to you Miss Loveday!

Cheese and Crackers
Good book! I am a horse girl myself, and usually stay away from books with horses because the author gets it all wrong. Not with this book! Only caught one flaw about the horses, but was no big deal. Narrator was wonderful, except for Lex's voice. He is roughly 25/26ish years old(?) and sounds like an 80 year old smoker, on death row, missing half a lung, after drinking lemon juice and baking soda. Other than Lex, the narration was wonderful!
Warning! There may be triggers for some!
Overall, this was a wonderful book and will definitely be reading/listening again!
