Summary

In 1982 Murakami began running to keep fit. Here he reflects on his running experiences. Equal parts travelogue, training log, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers his preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon.

By turns funny and sobering, playful and philosophical, this is a must-listen for fans of this masterful author and for the increasing number of people who find a similar satisfaction in running.

Critic reviews

"Hugely enjoyable.... You don’t have to run a marathon to be captivated." ( Sunday Telegraph)
"This is my most recent inspirational find.... Murakami makes me want to write hard and run far and fast." ( Easy Living)

Murikami on Writting and Running

Any fan of Murikami will love this, there are all his usual themes there, albeit not in the typical manner of his prose, but gives a great insight into his process and his discipline for writing.
Anyone who has read Stephen King's On Writing might get something similar from this.

Interesting content but couldn’t warm to the narrator

This is a short and interesting insight into a person’s motivation to compete in marathons and triathlons, albeit now a bit dated.
The story is good but I couldn’t warm to the audible narrator. He sounded constantly very angry and aggressive with the tone used throughout the book, turning what were probably written as simple observations into angry complaints about everything.

Affirming.

As a thrice-weekly runner of 10k per run this really held my attention and it was refreshing to be able to relate to an author’s stories so well. However, this book is not just for runners. It’s brilliantly told (and nicely narrated I might add) and every running-related vignette is interesting and humorous. Another perfectly crafted piece of work from Murakami.

Surprisingly great book

So I say surprisingly not because of the skill of this author which is is impressive on its own. Because it was randomly recommended to me by my barber based purely on our conversations about running and how much I enjoyed running. What was the surprise to me and would have been to my Barber as this had not been discussed was how much of this book also covers the topic of being an author of which I am very interested indeed. It has the right balance, mainly about running to be of interest to both audiences. The narrator was calming and interesting and the story was extremely uplifting. I certainly recommend this book.

Inspirational read for writers and runners

Great book...I have lots in common with Murakami...just none of the talent! A very enjoyable read for fans of Haruki, running or writing. I will definitely be reading more of his work.

highly recommend

Intimate, beautifully simple but not shallow, interesting and worth listening, not only for running lovers.

Thought provoking read

I wanted to read this book to learn more about how other runners feel. In reality this book isn't just aboig running, it's about life and it gives lot of insight into dealing with challenges thrown at us.
