Summary

They went on vacation. Not everyone made it back.

The Palmers went to the lake for a week of fun in the sun. But Alex Palmer had an agenda. He wanted his brother to reconcile with their hypercompetitive father. He wanted his daughter to break up with her shady boyfriend. Most of all, Alex wanted them to be a family one more time before he faced his predicament at home.

Evil incarnate and a brutal double murder shifted Alex’s focus from wants to needs. He needed to keep his family safe. He needed to find her. He needed to know what happened at the lake.

His pastor often said, “God won’t give you more than you can bear.” This had nothing to do with God.

Note to the listener: This is a dark psychological thriller that delves into depraved acts of humanity. For adult listeners only who can handle these subject matters. Adult language and explicit sexual violence.

Vacation from hell!

A nice relaxing vacation for the whole family, with the chance for old wounds to heal, nothing could possibly go wrong, right?

Alex invited his entire family for a blissful holiday at the lake, sun, watersports, relaxing, everything was going well...

...well until the plumbing problems, and who was that creepy guy camping on one of the lake islands?

Then the murders.

What is happening?
Could one of them be next?
What should they do?

But more importantly, is the murderer one of them?

Lots of suspects to choose from, more twists and turns than a mountain road, all within an enthralling read.

Highly recommended if you want to find out the answers to all the unanswered questions... So what did happen at the lake?

A Good read / listen

What happened at the Lake..
I could easily have rated this 5 star. The storyline is excellent and the characters interesting to say the least.
It started slow and took a long time to get into high gear. It is a book you want to read/listen to so the intrique and mystery keep you going until the explosion of action . Plenty of clues and red herrings as to who is the murderer right till the last page.
Narration of female characters is a little confusing (they all sound the same to me)
Anyway it is a book worth listening to.
I was given a free copy of this audio book at my own request, and voluntarily leave this review.

A Family Break Ends With Murder.

Phil M Williams gives us a family in What Happened At The Lake that is divided and suspicious of one another. Alex wants his family reunited but when there’s a murder old suspicions rise to the surface once more and everyone is a suspect. There are so many loathsome characters in this story that the murderer could be any one of them. There’s red herrings and twists and turns aplenty until the end. The authors writing has a short and sharp quality that gives the story pace and tension. There are some scenes that are very unpleasant but it’s fiction and should not be taken too seriously. Anyway, who said murder was nice? As with much of Phil M Williams work this book feels like there are many different parts as if the story could have ended at several different places. Personally, I’m glad it didn’t. This is my favourite book by this author and I’ve had the pleasure to read (or indeed listen to) most of them. Overall this is a dark tale of hateful people doing hideous things and a family torn apart by evil as well as a whodunit thrown into the mix.
The two narrators do another excellent job. I’ve been lucky enough to have listened to many of Phil M Williams books read by Tristan & Sarah Grace Wright and they do a great job every time. Tristan takes the male characters and Sarah the female which adds a nice dimension to the audiobook that you’d hardly ever achieve with a single narrator. They both have enough skill and talent to really bring multiple characters to life. The real success of reading audio-books is whether the listener ‘forgets’ they’re being read to and just gets into the story and this is the case here. A great story read with confidence and skill.

OMG! This book was so freaking good!

I just finished this book and I’m still feeling that great book buzz you get when you read or listen to an awesome book. I was so into this book it was the first thing I did when I woke up this morning. Phil Williams has a great knack for really setting the scene. As I read the families vacation felt like vacations I had been on with my own family… Well until the murder started. I did buy the multiple narrators or something to get used to and sometimes their tempos didn’t match one having a conversation but you easily get used to that. I can’t say enough about this awesome book if you like domestic thrillers and twists you don’t see coming this is the book for you and trust me when I say you don’t see the twist… I certainly didn’t see the twist coming and when it happened I was left with my mouth hanging open going oh my goodness, oh my goodness! This is a great book and one you won’t want to put down.
