The Martian meets 127 Hours in this powerfully humane thriller about a scuba diver who's been swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out.

Jay Gardiner has given himself a fool's errand: to find the remains of his deceased father in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. He knows it's a long shot, but Jay feels it's the only way for him to lift the weight of guilt he has carried since his dad's death the previous year.

The dive begins well enough, but the sudden appearance of a giant squid puts Jay in very real jeopardy, made infinitely worse by the arrival of a sperm whale looking to feed. Interesting story- as much about loss and regret but ultimately forgiveness and love. Well read - the kind of book that you feel is better suited to audible. I enjoyed it a lot and was less interested with the practicalities of his attempted escape and more with the father/son relationship. Definitely worth a listen.

For more empathy with the main protagonist, listen to this 'Jonah' story when you're cramped on a crosscountry rail train with no seat and feeling claustrophobic. I enjoyed how the story maintained momentum through fascinating research into the intricacies of a whale's body as the diver attempts his slow escape.

Quite short and sweet, but loved the character of Jay and the metaphorical and psychical journey that he embarks on

A beautifully written, it completely captivated and immersed me. I had emotion in my throat at many points. I didn't read the blurb in advance, so was surprised and delighted to come across this unique concept.

I am here because the film is out in 2 days times. To better understand the book the chapters are measurements of a diver oxygen tank 300 psi is a full tank. I enjoy the understanding the animal the sherm whale and it made for a great listen loved it.
