Summary

Night Vale is a small desert town where all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard are actually true. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge.

Nineteen-year-old Night Vale pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked 'KING CITY' by a mysterious man in a tan jacket. She can't seem to get the paper to leave her hand, and no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City before she herself unravels.

Diane Crayton's son, Josh, is moody and also a shape-shifter. And lately Diane's started to see her son's father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it.

Diane's search to reconnect with her son and Jackie's search for her former routine life collide as they find themselves coming back to two words: 'KING CITY'. It is King City that holds the key to both of their mysteries and their futures...if they can ever find it.

A huge dose of Night Vale life

If you're a long time listener of the Welcome to Night Vale podcast then you will love this book I'm sure. It has all of the trappings of the podcast and is a huge weird and wonderful addition to the Night Vale mythos.

If you're not already a fan of Welcome to Night Vale however, I have no idea how you might respond to this. I'd recommend checking out the podcast and listening to a few episodes up front. There's a lot of abstract and absurdest humour that really drives these stories and if that's not your thing this would be a potentially difficult and disappointing purchase for you.

Cecil's narration is flawless and he has put in an excellent performance throughout the book and I think that the writers have done an excellent job of taking the small dose format of the podcasts and extending that into a much more long form story with a few interspersals of familiar community radio action.

Better as audiobook

Usually audio-books do not connect for me but I think for Welcome to Night Vale choosing to listen to the audio-book was actually the better idea.

This is a story for fans of the podcast. Without an understanding of Night Vale and it’s wonderful quirks and who Cecil is the reader is going to struggle.

I did begin by reading the book but switched over to the audio-book after a couple of chapters. This made the whole experience so much better. It became an extended podcast adventure with two Night Vale residence at the helm. Having Cecil narrate the book is of course what makes it- because it reinforces the podcast feeling.

The story in-itself is true Night Vale. The is an accepted confusing throughout each tale, such as the concept of time and how Jackie is always 19. How Diane’s son Josh is who is, regardless how he represents who he is. I enjoy how Night Vale accepts all of this. How things connect in their own ways at some point in the story and how THE LIBRARY must always be feared.

I am not sure that if I read instead of listened I would have enjoyed this story the same way.

Perfect

I have no words for my love of this book. It's very much my go to listening when I can't sleep or need a distraction. Welcome to Night Vale generally is the weirdest form of comforting. While the actually story of this book is one that's been done time and time again (teenager fighting with their mother about finding their absent father) the weirdness of night Vale makes it new and fascinating. The story is funny and sad and heartwarming sometimes at the same time. I really cannot wait for It Devours to come out.

Awesome! Love the podcast and loved this too!

Really glad it was read by Cecil Baldwin. It would have been odd by anyone else! Great story as well as the usual fun nonsense :)

Already a fan of the podcast, loved Cecil, loved the story. Good references for those already fans but stand alone story that means you don't need to know anything about nightvale to enjoy it.

Loved it as humans can love semi-sentient things..

What did you like most about Welcome to Night Vale?

It was like an extra long podcast and links into the rest of the series.
Then again, the concept of time does not exist and therefore the book may have been whispery nothingness, cecil baldwin could have hypnotized me to think I heard the rest.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Welcome to Night Vale?

The most memerable moment was the big revel about "The man in the tan jacket", which has mystified us all since the early days.
Secondly, the discussion about the sky, everyone in Night Vale knows there's no such thing as the sky; only the all-consuming void...

What does Cecil Baldwin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Cecil brings Cecil. and Carlos. and Khoshekh. and Khoshekh's magical kittens. and Mayor Dana Cardinal. and The Faceless Old Woman. and Hiram Mc...
You know what guys, it's getting a bit crowded in my room with all of you in here!

My point being; an episode of NVCR (albeit extra long episode), wouldn't be the same without our favorite community radio host, Cecil.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
